House to vote on importance of Christmas, Christianity
The Kansas City Star ^ | December 10, 2007 | Rob Hotakainen

Who says Congress doesn’t do anything?

On Tuesday, the House will vote on a resolution recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.

We’re going out on a limb and predicting this one will pass.

It’s sponsored by Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa. And it has 51 cosponsors: two Democrats and 49 Republicans, including Missouri Republican Rep. Todd Akin and Kansas Republican Rep. Todd Tiahrt.

The resolution is below the fold:

RESOLUTION

Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith. Whereas Christmas, a holiday of great significance to Americans and many other cultures and nationalities, is celebrated annually by Christians throughout the United States and the world; Whereas there are approximately 225,000,000 Christians in the United States, making Christianity the religion of over three-fourths of the American population; Whereas there are approximately 2,000,000,000 Christians throughout the world, making Christianity the largest religion in the world and the religion of about one-third of the world population; Whereas Christians identify themselves as those who believe in the salvation from sin offered to them through the sacrifice of their savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and who, out of gratitude for the gift of salvation, commit themselves to living their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Bible; Whereas Christians and Christianity have contributed greatly to the development of western civilization; Whereas the United States, being founded as a constitutional republic in the traditions of western civilization, finds much in its history that points observers back to its roots in Christianity; Whereas on December 25 of each calendar year, American Christians observe Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ; Whereas for Christians, Christmas is celebrated as a recognition of God's redemption, mercy, and Grace; and Whereas many Christians and non-Christians throughout the United States and the rest of the world, celebrate Christmas as a time to serve others: Now, therefore be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives--(1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;(3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;(5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and(6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.

Simple really. Liberals do not believe in God. They think they created everything.

I would vote against it because it is absolutely pointless.
I would vote against it in protest of the time wasted. If liberals ever wanted to howl about violations of the first amendment*, this would be a good one.

*I realize this is a resolution and not a law, but I think the point stands.

It needs to be more inclusive. It doesn’t recognize the importance of homos or atheists. It doesn’t proclaim Islam as the religion of peace. It doesn’t apologize for the oppression of women or people of a any particular colored persuasion. It doesn’t begin to address the problem of imminent destruction we face because of global warming. And the children; how does it help the children. And what about Hiroshima? This is a non starter.

She will not be the only one.

I don’t want government to vote on this or issues like government voting for my right to free speech.

These rights come from God, not man and we need no law for them, only our Constitution.

I’m with you.

Puffing out their chests and making meaningless pronouncements when there are real problems to address is worthy of our contempt.

“Hey, we can’t fix what’s broken, but we make 225 million people feeeeeeeeel good if we do this thing.”

It’s sad that we’ve allowed ourselves to be so muzzled by the PC nazis that we have to come to this absurd nonsense in the first place.

What’s even worse is that these polit-tools actually believe that their vapid law will effect even the minutest of change among the neutered liberals, and to a much, much lesser degree, to the Christian devout.

The fact that congress has already voted on resolution honoring the contributions of two other faiths is going to make it hard for them to deny us this resolution.

.
If the House “rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide”, is that actionable? Would it require actual rejection of such on their part?

I think it’s sad.

Sad we’ve come to this.

Sad that the hypocrats had two people supporting it while 49 Republicans did.

But on the other hand, it’s also sad that congress is wasting our time with this, because something like this is meaningless. ACLU types will still make it their life’s work to make it unbearable for Christians to live in this country.

Funny...the people that abhor laws that so much as recognize Christianity, however meaningless, but pay no attention whatsoever to rules/ laws etc. that tear it down.

I’m with you, this is a complete waste of time and tax dollars. It’s hard to believe anyone would find value in such a pathetic charade, I’d hope more freepers could see through such b.s.

The House has already passed HRES 635 which (taken from Thomas)...

Recognizes the Islamic faith as one of the great world religions.

Acknowledges the onset of Ramadan and expresses deepest respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world on this significant occasion.

Expresses friendship and support for Muslims in the United States and worldwide.

Rejects hatred, bigotry, and violence directed against Muslims both in the United States and worldwide.

Commends Muslims in the United States and across the globe who have privately and publicly rejected interpretations and movements of Islam that justify and encourage hatred, violence, and terror.
