The subject of the sermon in my Reform Jewish service was Christopher Hitchens. Though our (Canadian immigrant) rabbi is an extreme liberal, he did take Hitchens apart, argument by argument.

What?!?!!? The brain-deficients think Chanukah candles cause global warming?!?!?! They're serious?!!?!?!?!?! Puleeeeeeeze! Get out about 100 menorahs and give me room, my lighter and I will be busy for a while! Then I'll crank on a bunch of Christmas trees and really get the loons out of joint!

Jewcy, an online hipster magazine... greeted Chanukah (Dec. 4) with the headline, "A Very Osama Hanukkah." Writer Steve Almond... concludes, "Osama Bin Laden may be the person on the planet most attuned to the joys of Hanukkah." After all, the Maccabees were an "insurgency," and Eliezer, one of the Maccabees, who died sacrificing himself in battle, "sounds to me like a Biblical version of the suicide bombers who launch themselves at military convoys in Iraq..." When Judah Maccabee decapitated an enemy general, Almond writes, "isn't the gesture really just an old school version of the decapitation videos Al Qaeda uses today to horrify its Western foes?" ...Christopher Hitchens... argues that if Judaism would have been conveniently eliminated by the Greek-Syrians, "we would never have had to hear of Jesus." And "without the precedents of Orthodox Judaism and Roman Christianity... there would be no Islam, either..." In Israel, environmentalists charged that lighting Chanukah candles contributes to global warming... Ellen Goodman wrote earlier this year in The Boston Globe (Feb. 9), "Let's just say that global warming deniers are now on a par with Holocaust deniers," and she's not the only one to make that comparison... Gil Hoffman reports in the Jerusalem Post (Dec. 4), "...The founders of the Green Hanukkia campaign found that every candle that burns completely produces 15 grams of carbon dioxide. If an estimated one million Israeli households light for eight days, they said, it would do significant damage to the atmosphere."
...and Christmas carolling caused 9/11.

After all, the Maccabees were an insurgency, and Eliezer, one of the Maccabees, who died sacrificing himself in battle, sounds to me like a Biblical version of the suicide bombers who launch themselves at military convoys in Iraq. It wasn't a sacrifice so much as a lesson gone wrong. Eliezer told his soldiers that the best way to kill a war elephant was to run underneath and stab it with a spear, but when he demonstrated in the middle of a battle, the elephant fell on him. I believe that Eliezer's death was the oldest known case in history where somebody's last words were, "Hey y'all, watch this!"

The pagans hate Hannukah because it teaches Man is not a god... he must bow to the Creator who made him and who is the true source of his dignity and freedom.

The Holocaust issue deservedly give Judaism a lot of respect and leeway.
Jewish folks deserve a lot for what has happened in the past. And considering how Europe and the Middle East are currently behaving ... I hope we stand firm with our Jewish brethren.

Greens, Atheists Attack Chanukah Candles cause global warming, Maccabees compared to Osama.
Greens and atheists generally are moral and intellectual brothers. They both use the most outmoded, illogical, hysterial, and intentionally deceptive arguments to avoid reality while retaining a point of view that enables them to feel superior while doing nothing more to defend it than sneering and asserting that their opponents are not worthy of a response or should be overthrown for the benefit of mankind.
