Bloomie and Arnie, Centrist Twins (for Prez and Veep?)
New York Magazine ^ | Dec 17, 2007 | Geoffrey Gray

Only the Constitution can keep them apart

Mayor Bloomberg’s political guru, Kevin Sheekey, continues his quest to get his boss in a position to run for president.

According to a well-placed source, Sheekey’s latest project is to figure out if they could get California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as a potential running mate. This summer, Bloomie and Arnie shared a few centrist photo ops.

The East Coast–West Coast alliance would have its advantages in the Electoral College, certainly. But other parts of the Constitution are more problematic, like where it mentions that only a “natural-born Citizen … shall be eligible for the Office of President.” It doesn’t mention the veep, though.

The source says Bloomberg has lawyers studying things like “succession plans” to see how it would work: If something happens, say, to President Bloomberg, does that mean Vice-President Schwarzenegger is overlooked and the Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi) gets to take over?

A spokesman for Bloomberg declined to comment.

From Forbes, 12.15.07
Look out, Hillary and Barack, here comes Mike. No, not Mike Huckabee (though he'd better watch out, too). Mike Bloomberg--Mayor Mike as millions of New Yorkers more or less affectionately call him.

And this time it is for real. Folks close to New York City's twice-elected mayor suggest that he's made up his mind to end one of the city's long-running rumors and become an Independent candidate for president.

The date of his announcement? Pencilled in for right after Super Tuesday--Feb. 5. ...

Arnie cannot run - he fails to meet the Constitutional qualification.

But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

I’d like to know where this rag gets the idea that Bloomberg and Schwartsenegger are “centrists.”

I find it amazing that so many think there is some potential for a “centrist” movement in this country.

NEWSFLASH: Most of the people in the political/social/cultural “middle” in this country are...(drumroll)...Conservatives!

They may not know it. They may not care about politics. But, when they take the time to find out the truth about most issues, they will lean “right” back to the middle.

Unfortunately, the MSM has convinced itself and the Left that “moderates” are people who favor action on “global warming,” abortion, universal health care, open-boarders, gun control, higher taxes for government services, secular policies, etc. All this stuff may sound good on the surface, but lose traction when looked at with facts and common sense.

The Democrats better hope the “Mindless Middle” doesn’t get a clue. Because they will be relegated to the place they belong...alone on the Left.

Honestly, as I'm reading it, there does seem to be some room for question. The Constitution, on face value, does not seem to outline any qualifications for Vice-President, only President.

However, it does say, "In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President . . ."

Perhaps Sheekey has a good argument. IF something happens to the President, THEN the Vice-President is not qualified to serve and it the presidency would be assumed by the Speaker of the House.

Interesting argument. Can't say I would support this ticket, but I would like to hear what the Supreme Court says about this scenario.

If they are centrists then I am so far in right field that it's a $50 cab ride to home plate.

Read the 12th Amendment...it's quite specific about the qualifications about the VP... you have to meet the qualifications of Prez to be VP:
But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

The Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution requires the vice president to meet the same eligibility requirements as the president. That is, the vice president must be at least 35 years of age, a natural born citizen of the United States, and a resident of the U.S. for 14 years.

" ... But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States."
