Patch Tuesday security update causes problems with IE for some
ars technica ^ | December 18, 2007 | Paul Mah

There were apparently some problems with at least one of the updates released last week as part of Microsoft's Patch Tuesday update for the month of December. The problem shows up with IE 6 and IE 7 and affects both XP and Vista. The issue surfaces slightly more than half the time upon firing up Internet Explorer. A dialog pops up with the message that "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close." It is still possible to use Internet Explorer, though it normally takes restarting Internet Explorer a few times before it opens successfully. Customized homepages appear to be the catalyst to trigger this error.

It is believed that an update named KB942615 should have been coded to force a reboot, but was not. Consequently, some parts of the update that requires a reboot before being applied does not get done, causing the above-mentioned problem.

According to Bill Drake over at Vista Community board, the following steps resolved the problem for him:

For those experiencing this problem, please try moving to a blank opening page--and then reboot your machine again after the KB942615 update is installed. Once this is done, restore your default homepage. See if this procedure resolves your problem.

Microsoft is currently investigating the issue.

I was having problems with IE closing down along with the famous microsoft box informing me that a problem had been encountered and it was going to close down. After rolling back the system to December 11th and not loading KB942615 it is running fine.

Can’t they get anything right! Do they test this stuff before they release it?

Odd. It happened with one of our laptops for a while, but it seems to have fixed itself.

Yes, they do test this stuff before they release it.

The problem is that they can’t test their patches on every single possible hardware configuration out there. And that’s the root of the problems with Windows: Microsoft never really stood firm on the idea of not supporting particular devices or protocols.

Dear Microsoft,
I suspect this new strategy won't lessen the "retro-migration"
from Vista to XP.

More than likely it will help create a few more Apple users.
And they'll be entitled to be a bit smug about taking their $$$
over to Jobs and Co.

No charge for this info.
In order to be paid for advice this transparently obvious,
I'd have to be "a professional business consultant" that graduated
from some Ivy League School.
Or Oxford or Cambridge.

Suspicions confirmed.

I get IE shutdowns wih no warning box.
Usually have to open it 3 times and then still get random closures.

I gave up and went back to Firefox until they fix the patch.

Bill Gates thinking:
“Should I invest the money to do the Windows software right or should I make another $100,000,000 in profits to give away and get more awards from bootlickers? Hmmm.....”

I’ve been using Vista for two months now with almost no problems. One slight bug in the sleep mode and smooth scrolling but other than that everything works fine and I really like the operating system. However, I haven’t used IE at all nor Outlook Express. I dumped both for Firefox and Thunderbird and haven’t looked back, although I use Yahoo web mail for most of my e-mail as it is secure on Yahoo’s servers. It’s almost as transparent as OE or Thunderbird. Some web sites require the actual IP provider’s e-mail address so I use it when required.

But there is no good reason to continue with IE any longer. Firefox has gotten it right and Thunderbird is just fine.

You're right, but some of the websites I visit will not operate properly except with IE.

BTW, if anyone knows the fix to that smooth scrolling bug when the computer awakens from the sleep mode, please let me know. The only thing that fixes it is to reboot. Otherwise everything else works fine but the scrolling is jerky.

The fix to the IE bug is to stop using it and go to Firefox.

Unfortunatley thats a problem. We have 4 remote hosted apps that dont work with anything other than IE. In fact 1 of them wont even use IE7. I have to use IE6. Go figure...

Occasionally I run into that problem but it’s seldom. Those particular web sites are just cutting their own throats if they won’t run Firefox. I guess I have IE somewhere on my PC but I couldn’t find it the other day. I might have deleted it when I was cleaning up the machine. I haven’t missed it at any rate.
