Non-believing US voters feel demonized (whiners)

One presidential hopeful is a preacher, another proudly Mormon, and most openly tout their Christianity. In an arena where faith can make or break a politician, the one in 10 Americans who profess no religion feel left in the cold. "They're very disconcerted," said Darren Sherkat, an atheist sociology professor specializing in religion at Southern Illinois University.

"They're horrified by both the Democratic and Republican rhetoric surrounding religion -- that people who are not religious ... are immoral, that they're not qualified to serve in public office," he said.

Not posting this to start a lets thump on people with differing theological views thread ok?

I personally am not religious. I do not feel "demonized" at all.

I have no idea what these whiny whacks are so upset about.

You hold these views, you deal with the fact that people are different from time to time. Shocker.

They make a religion out of being athiests! LOL

"We're persucuted man! nobody caters to us!"

Just sick of it from whomever it comes from.

And they always claim to speak for everyone.

From this whiny wimp to Jessie Jackson.

The only special interest group I care about is American citizens! Now THAT is a shunned and ignored group by our politicians!

So far, some of the candidates have been trying to "Out religious' the other without talking about the issues.

Huck and Mitt are vying for the 'Fake conservative in trying to be the most holy' category.

Beliefs should guide you, not determine if you are presidential.

I am a committed Christian and Huckabee scares me, too.

He’s a complete liberal freakshow cloaked in pseudo-Christian code words: Jimmah Carter’s second term.

“Non-believing US voters feel demonized”

Interesting choice of words - I would think if you don’t believe in god you don’t believe in demons either?

Huckabee reminds me that I never hire a plumber or electrician (or anyone else) that has a little “Jesus fish” on their Yellow Pages ad.

Anyone who advertises their business or runs for office, based on Christian creditials, IS A WHITEWASHED TOMB, Beautiful to behold, but filled with ROTTEN CORRUPTION on the inside.

Pray in private where no one can see you.

I think 1 in 10 is an awfully optimistic number.

Wait a minute. I’m fairly sure these “non-believers” believe in something. It’s just that the vast majority of Americans and presidential candidates do not share their beliefs.

...people who are not religious ... are immoral...

The only one saying this is that atheist professor who hates religion.

I tend to agree. I also think religion can be based on non-ritualistic philosophy, which makes me a philosophical Catholic and a philosophical Jew.

My problem is with those who OPPOSE religion...it is a growing group and has become a “religion” unto its own. They are attempting to make religion evil...all because of their own discomfort and guilt.

I saw an (out of state) bumper sticker in a Lowe’s parking lot in Ozark, Missouri, last night:

RELIGION RULED THE MIDDLE AGES

Made me pretty angry. Probably because most of the Christians I know would just ignore it, walk away, or offer to buy the person dinner.

Me, I wanted to get in their face...scrape a few elbows.

Oddly, there are no atheists professors in the life sciences. This prof should ponder that and observe the complexity of a living planet. Cars, computers, sky-scrapers, all created by man, are blocks of stone by comparison.

an atheist sociology professor specializing in religion

That's a good career choice, specializing in what you deem to be nonsense. Unless, he actually admits that atheism IS a religion. I have yet to meet one who admits that.

Since the Democrats are all lying about their faith, the atheists shouldn’t feel left out.
