I didn't see the famous floating cross. What I saw when I watched Mike Huckabee's Christmas commercial was a nice man in a sweater sitting next to a brightly lit tree. He had easy warmth and big brown puppy-dog eyes, and he talked about taking a break from politics to remember the peace and joy of the season. Sounds good to me.
Only on second look did I see the white lines of the warmly lit bookcase, which formed a glowing cross. Someone had bothered to remove the books from that bookcase, or bothered not to put them in. Maybe they would have dulled the lines.
Is there a word for "This is nice" and "This is creepy"? For that is what I felt. This is so sweet-appalling.
I love the cross. The sight of it, the fact of it, saves me, literally and figuratively. But there is a kind of democratic politesse in America, and it has served us well, in which we are happy to profess our faith but don't really hit people over the head with its symbols in an explicitly political setting, such as a campaign commercial, which is what Mr. Huckabee's ad was.
I wound up thinking this: That guy is using the cross so I'll like him. That doesn't tell me what he thinks of Jesus, but it does tell me what he thinks of me. He thinks I'm dim. He thinks I will associate my savior with his candidacy. Bleh.

Peggy Noonan is one of those “Wall Street-Washington” insider elitists so take her opinion with a grain of salt.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Opinion? Peggy’s just confused.
Huckabee is an ADVOCATE for ILLEGAL immigrants as a governor,
then issues a hard-@$$ policy stance on ILLEGAL immigrants when vying
for the Republican Presidential slot.
Thus I take what Huckabee says with a sub-lethal dose of salt.
Hmmmmm. God must have something going with that double letter in the last name.
They all pander to their strengths. Huckabee is being what he is, not a preacher, a politician!
I agree with the "Wall Street-Washington" insider elitist part. But salt, even a grain, is a spice and spice, even as little as a grain, adds flavor.
I'm scratching my head over Huckabee. I liked the commercial. I don't think the cross what a trick of light. I liked that.
But he denied, sorta, that it was intentional. To my thinking, he should have owned up to it and dared any of his inquisitors to make an issue of it. This is Christmas. The cross is a symbol of Chistmas. The cross belongs to the message. I would have liked that much better.
But he didn't. So, like Noonan, I'm suspicious of what that reflects about his personality and his motives.
For my money, looks like the grain in Noonan's opinion might not be salt but a truth. Maybe.
You should have taken a look at my tagline. You might have detected a bit sarcasm.
Ah
I shoulda.
I woulda.
:-)
Thanks,
R.
But Peggy is a down-to-earth person who puts the truth out there for all to understand.
Huckabee is one of the purest demagogues that I can recall.
who is also a liar.
He brags about having a theology degree.
He has a BA in speech and communications. He went to theological seminary for one year and then dropped out to work for a televangelist.
Telling everyone he has a theology degree is like someone going to law school for a year, dropping out, and then telling everyone they have a law degree.
Lying about your credentials can get you fired from a job.
Huckabee lying about his theology degree disqualifies him from being President of the United States.
I wound up thinking this: That guy is using the cross so I'll like him. That doesn't tell me what he thinks of Jesus, but it does tell me what he thinks of me.
However, concerning what he thinks about Christ, if he felt so strongly that he needed to place the cross in this message, why not make it unambiguous and stand by it instead of using the glow enhanced edges of a bookcase to give the impression of the cross to those who saw it but which he could later deny.
Those who are not Christians would not care about this, but for me the fact that he used the cross and then denied the cross was the most telling thing to come from this ad.

You forgot to mention she hit the bullseye with this column!
A preacher and a politician. The Huckster switches those two masks so often and so smoothly, that it’s hard to see the real man. His BS gives me the hackles, there is something very wrong about that guy. His lies and his kid and his bogus degree and his bleeding heart pardons of murderers, etc. Take your pick.
