Democrats: IRS Should Have Acted Before We Did By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Senior Editor December 21, 2007
(CNSNews.com) - If Americans face delays in the getting their tax refunds this year, Democratic leaders want them to blame the Bush administration -- even though the Democrat-led Congress caused the problem.
In a letter to President Bush on Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urged him "to make every effort to ensure" that the 23 million families who will benefit from AMT relief "receive their refund in a timely manner."
But Congress did not pass AMT relief in a timely matter.
It wasn't until Wednesday of this week -- the very last minute -- that Congress finally passed a temporary fix for the Alternative Minimum Tax, a levy that increasingly ensnares the middle class.
As press reports and administration officials have warned for weeks, the fix comes a bit late.
Millions of Americans are expected to face delays in getting their tax refunds because the Internal Revenue Service must scramble to revise and print tax forms -- and change its computer programs -- to reflect the changes.
The New York Times reported on Dec. 5 that the delay in passing the AMT fix was already endangering a "smooth start" to the tax filing season. According to that Dec. 5 report, the main problem is reprogramming I.R.S. computers: "The agency's protocol calls for seven weeks to analyze changes in tax law, write the software code and test it, as well as notify all the tax professionals and others affected," the New York Times reported.
But Pelosi and Reid said the IRS should have anticipated what Congress would end up doing.

It’s so funny how Reid and Pelosi think Bush runs the day-to-day of every governmental agency.
They can’t take responsibility for anything.
It proves they are the liberals they are.
Liberalism is evil incarnate.
The same holds true for all those software companies that sell programs for your home computer. They should have guessed exactly how Nancy would cave and program accordingly.
That's like figuring what a squirrel on meth will do crossing the freeway.
As much as I dislike those two (Pelosi and Reid), Lott and the allegedly Republican majorities had several years to completely get rid of the AMT.
Now I dislike the Democrats quite a bit, but the GOP *HANDED* this issue to them to beat us over the head with.
This shows that neither of them have the slightest idea of what computer code is, how it is written, or what is involved in making sure it works. How was the IRS supposed to "anticipate" what Congress would do? The guess with the highest probablility would have been "nothing". Basically that's what happened. Nothing. Nothing except causing tax refunds to be late, while not actually fixing the real problem at all. Piss off the public, and blame it on Bush, when Bush had nothing to do with this failure of leadership. Reid and Pelosi are pathetic.

ROFL! Oh, the visual!
;D! Good thing the coffee cup was empty!
I heard another one this week.
“Sending a 983 page PDF.file via e-mail was like trying to squeeze an elephant through a garden hose.”
Merry Christmas!
I have to agree with Lewis Black here....” Ya mean I can download 3000 vagina’s in less than a minute on my computer, but the IRS can’t get a check out on time?”
I anticipate that they'll cut my taxes. This year, I've decided to send in less loot...
So, can anyone imagine what would the response have been had GWB instructed the IRS to go ahead and change the code in anticipation of the AMT patch and then congress had not passed the Patch??
GWB would have been skewered and made to pay up for the cost and deemed dumb as a box of rocks.
Pelosi reminds me of OJ,,she is believing her own lies.
The Communists should be run out of town on a rail for suggesting, indirectly, that our Constitution is a meaningless document.
Ping to Man50D
That’s like saying the Pentagon should have been withdrawing the troops from Iraq right after the congressional elections based on ‘rat intentions.
As I'm sure all of you know when the dems say its going to "cost the government $50 Million" it means the IRS is going to only make $200 million instead of $250 million....I'm sure the numbers are higher and the $50 million is less substantial but you get my point.
A squirrel on meth trying to cross a highway would probably jump over the cars.
Sillier and sillier to defend this tax code....
OKAY, who said this?
“There is nothing inherently wrong with the income tax”.
