Conservative officials who served in the Reagan administration are upset by the left-wing slant of the new movie about the covert action program that helped Afghan guerrillas defeat the Soviet army during the 1980s.

The Reagan-era officials said the movie promotes the left-wing myth that the CIA-led operation funded Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda and ultimately produced the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Aaron Sorkin the screenwriter.

That movie goes on my redacted list.

So yet again Hollywood revises history to fit their own lies. Nothing new here.

I wonder how they feel about fat Teddy passing info to the Soviets in an attempt to hurt Carter and improve his own election chances.

‘The officials blamed the anti-Reagan slant of the film on the movie’s screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin’

Otherwise known as “Mushroom boy” at NBC.

I wonder when we’ll hear the ‘film at 11’ announcement on that one? /sarc/

Like another poster said, this one will go to my ‘redacted’ list. A shame, too. I like Tom Hanks as an actor but will not put one red cent into the pockets of a hollywood that spews anti-American garbage.

I don't know which damns Aaron Sorkin more: that he is a crackhead, or that he once dated -- EWWWWWWW! -- Mo Dowd.

In any case, if Charlie Wilson were in the congress today, he'd be a pariah among democrats for fomenting war against the Soviets/Russia. So Sorkin's screed actually celebrates a democrat party that no longer exists.

The sad thing is that Charlie Wilson was the type of democrat that would be targeted for removal by today’s democrats.

One has on the one hand the breathless “Charlie Wilson’s War” by George Crile and on the other the staid “Afghanistan: The Bear Trap,” by the Pakistan ISI General Mohammad Yousaf who was in charge of support to the Afghan Mujahideen during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Simply put, for every dollar given by the USA to defeat the Soviets, a dollar and more was given by Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. The Saudi money was used to pay the mujahideen. The US money bought weapons which were turned over to the Pakistan ISI either at Karachi port or at Pak airfields. The Saudi and ISI principles controlled activity at Peshawar; the CIA had only the foggiest notion of what the Afghan-Arabs — including Azzam and bin Laden — were up to. I will see the movie but I imagine what I will view is the usual Hollywood fairy-tale.

hanks has been making some VERY BAD part choices.

Julia robets is trying to act in this one so that was DOA right there.

The commercials seems a bit tooo happy american to be true.

I remember people from this era. It is pretty clear the people who wrote this had no clue about that era or the real world.

I will see the movie today and I’ve read the book twice. If the movie is true to the book I no one will be disappointed on how the Reagan administration is portrayed.
The neglect shown to Afghanistan after the Soviets left is a historical fact and filling the void was the Taliban. We were not arm and arm with OBL but with the local Muj. fighters.
Let’s all take a deep breath and shoot down the movie just yet. It was one of the best books you could want to read and gave you real perspective on Afghanistan. Charley was flawed to the max, but he was also a real hero.

helped Afghan guerrillas defeat the Soviet army during the 1980s.

Wow. Talk about spin. Since 9/11 all the liberals could spin was that President Reagan funded Osama Bin Laden. Now this comes out and the Democrat wasn't funding Osam Bin Laden he was defeating the Soviet Union.
Which was the exact opposite of what most of the Democrats at the time wanted. They wanted Reagan to stop funding our military so that the Soviet Union would be able to stop funding their military so as to keep the Soviet Union in power.

Charley knew how to play the system better than anyone else. Most of the dems supported Charley because they owed him not because the liked the war. The CIA was scared to death of their own shadow because of the Church Commission so they had to be dragged into this build up.

Many people here prejudge, and the previous poster was right..

In TODAY’s Democratic Party, Charlie Wilson would be a pariah, ala Joe Lieberman.

Later on, when the Democrat Leadership latched on to this, it was to give the impression that Democrats REALLY WOULD fight the Soviets, while at the same time attacking Reagan for the Contras deal...
