Mesa High School teacher and softball coach Gay Lyn Turley was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of having a four-year sexual relationship with a teenage girl that began when the teen was her student.

Special Report: Reading, Writing and Wrongdoing

The arrest of Turley, 42, by Gilbert police came just hours after the last class of the semester was let out at the high school. She has been the softball coach at Mesa High since 1989.

Turley was arrested on suspicion of sexual contact with a minor.

And it came two days after the victim, now 20, first told police about the lengthy relationship.

Police spokesman Sgt. Mark Marino said when Turley was questioned, she admitted the allegations were true.

Turley, who lives in Gilbert, could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.

The relationship first began in 2003, when the girl, whose name was not released, was 16 and a student at the high school, according to police.

She started staying overnight at Turley’s house in May of that year, and the relationship eventually became sexual, Marino said. At 18, the relationship grew as the girl moved in with Turley.

Things apparently soured between the two women sometime this year when, according to police, the girl moved out of Turley’s home.

Thanks for the link. Most of those are doable. Wish I was 16 again.

Gay, yup that sums it up.

Gay is probably not on her birth certificate. I had a male neighbor that introduced himself to me as,"Hi, I'm gay". This was several years after my son told me that a girl in college had introduced herself in the same exact way. She was gay, too. A few years ago my neighbor died of AIDS.

” our local government school does not have gymnastics,”

I cannot speak for the other sports, but I can speak for gymnastics.

Our local schools did promote gymnastics for many years in the 70’s and 80’s.
It was a logistical nightmare for many reasons..

-gym space/storage space. There either had to be a permanent spot found in the school for the equipment to remain set up and hold meets, or the equipment had to be set up and taken down for every practice and competition (and for anyone who has ever set up uneven bars - they know what a pain that is)
-the very nature of the sport - constant change of the equipment specs., and nature of the skills being constantly developed ensured that once a school invested in a complete set of equipment, it was outdated within a very short amount of time.
for ex: uneven bars can run $5,000 a set. Same with a proper foam block, or spring loaded floor.
Schools could not justify the cost to taxpayers to shell out the dough every few years to update to current standards.
-liability insurance. Gymnastics is a risky sport. I know - I was a gymnast for 15 yrs. A coach and a judge for another 15 yrs.

-the nature of the sport, itself, ensures that only those children who began training in younger years (5-9yrs) are able to progress in the skill level that will make them potential prospects for college level competition, or international competition.
In other words - it is a private club sport (and I’m sure tha applies to ice skating as well).

If you want to “make it” in gymnastics, you don’t petition your local schools to start a program. Instead, you enroll in a private club that is affiliated with USA gymnastics and progress throught their level 1-elite program.

You won’t see colleges recruiting from high schools, and you won’t see gymnasts competing for the local high school team trying out for the olympics.

I would like to say that as a MHS alumni myself I can clarify some things for you people. yes the school is in a middle class area, but that area is also heading south. The areae is populated by mormons and mexicans. I have never had a class with Coach Turley(yes she was a p.e. teacher) but yes, there were some girls who would swear up and down that she was a lesbian. The fact that she breached her student teacher contract is a shame, but the girl who had told on her was also quite dumb. She willingly lived and had relations with Coach Turley. She may have been a minor, but she still concented to it. Another thing is that Mesa High has an outstanding p.e. program. The school just recently won an award for it. Thhere’s aerobics, all kinds of different dance classes, all kinds of sports, and there have been female football players, and my senior year, the school had their first male cheerleader. Just saying.

“but the girl who had told on her was also quite dumb. “

the world is full of dumb young girls who are minors.

the issue is a state certified teacher who violated her role as a teacher.
There is absolutely no excuse for the coach’s behavior.

none whatsoever.

I was wondering if that was a first name or an adjective.

Proud of it was he?

Where the heck do you live anyway? out here you would probably get your a$$ kicked or at a minimum, shunned.

As union hack Albert Shanker phrased the Union’s deep and abiding concern for the students, “When school children start paying union dues, that ‘s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.”

Homosexuals have moved into the government school territory, and, remember folks, homosexuals hire other homosexuals. I expect to see a lot more of this.

Exhibit B: The women on the Madison Wisconsin Fire Department.

In my first few days of college I was surprised to hear a girl in my dorm ask another one "Are you gay?" and the answer, "Yes." I found out later that the second girl's real name was "Gay" and she probably wasn't.

This was back when "gay" was just beginning to have a double meaning.

Am I seeing a resemblance between this perp Gay Lyn Turley and the infamous Aileen Wuornos?
Or is it just an over active imagination on my part?
