APs Libby Quaid wrote on December 21, Thompson suffered a stinging setback Thursday, when conservative Rep. Tom Tancredo dropped out of the presidential running and endorsed another rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Tancredo, a Colorado congressman, is a hero to many voters who are furious at illegal immigration in this country, and a lot of them are Iowa caucus goers. The endorsement was a disappointment to Thompson, especially since his week had begun on a high note with the unexpected backing of another anti-immigration hero, Rep. Steve King.
There is a small problem with the AP story: the facts. Tancredo did endorse Romney, but Thompson actually benefited from Tancredos withdrawal, possibly more than Romney did. Thompsons campaign staff was stunned: not by Tancredos speech, but APs coverage. And heres why.
As reported by The Politico, Bill Salier -- Tancredos Iowa state chairman -- is joining Thompsons team: He's a true-believing social conservative who ran an uphill race in the '02 GOP Senate primary that raised some eyebrows. In short: He's the sort of worker bee a campaign likes to have on its side. If Salier puts his shoulder to the wheel for Fred, he could be a major asset.
The basic story was not contrived: Tancredo did withdraw and endorse Romney. But the misreporting of it was the functional equivalent of an attack ad directed at Thompson. And it cannot have been accidental. No young reporter would be able to do that without an editors approval. Or, more likely, an editors orders.
If Tancredos withdrawal caused his chief Iowa asset to shift allegiance to Thompson, how is Tancredos endorsement of Romney a stinging setback for Thompson? It isnt. Which raises the issue about AP that I raised in 2006: which of its editors is responsible for the contrived stories?

Absolutely. Thompson by far came out ahead. Thompson also picked up Angie Weaver Anderson who worked for Tancredo.
LOL. Somehow it’s a good thing that Thompson picked up two staffers from Tancredo’s campaign?
Tancredo never polled above zero, so why would you want his managers?
Another interesting thing about the AP story was that it may have been the only time that they covered Tancredo in a positive light...
Funny that Tancredo’s low support was always ridiculed by the media....until he endorsed Romney.
Thompson gets the benefit of Tancredo’s campaign staff...which in the long run is better than Tancredo’s endorsement
i dont like that they leave hunter out of everything. they are tryign to keep him out of the news.
Someone asked Rush what he thought of AP on his show one day and his answer wasn’t kind. Everything you read by AP has to be filtered to analyze the intent. They don’t just report the news, they doctor it. I really can’t see how that would be different from CNNABCCBSNBC though.
APs goal, marginalize conservatives. Once you get that, it all makes sense. Just don’t play.
Don’t worry, they will cover the story when Duncan drops out too.
You have to show you have support, either polling or money, to get media coverage. The media didn’t give Huckaby any coverage until he started polling double digits. And they ran stories on Ron Paul after he raised $6 million in one day. Unfortunately Duncan hasn’t shown the ability to generate much of either.
100% correct!
AP, along with the rest of the MSM propagandist media.
I attended a Tancredo event where Salier gave a speech introducing Tancredo. When Tancredo got up, he said he should be introducing Salier instead of Salier introducing him.
Salier started his speech by saying, "I'm Bill Salier, and still don't like Tom Harkin." It got huge applause.
I had always been under the impression that CNNABCCBSNBC (as well as FOX) got most of their news from AP, thereby repeating the misinformation provided by AP.
Garbage in equals garbage out.
I don't either..very frustrating. Hunter is my 2nd choice. I had never even heard of him until he began a bid for the Presidential nod, and I'm pretty certain we haven't heard the last from Duncan Hunter!
If I ran the world we'd see Hunter on Pres. Thompson's cabinet for 4-8 years, followed by 4-8 years of Presidency. :)
I don’t think Hunter will drop out any time in the near future. Do you think Fred supporters will be mad at Fred if he drops out after SC and endorses McCain? It was Fred’s to lose and he lost it, Romney’s to buy and he bought it. The Huckster’s huckstering is starting to wear thin, so he will be out of the picture pretty soon. Rudy had a lot of conservatives worried, but it looks like either Romney or a brokered convention. Either way the conservative cause loses a little more much as it does with every election.
“i dont like that they leave hunter out of everything. they are tryign to keep him out of the news.”
Thompson too, they just can’t do it quite as effectively.
Nasty stuff.
Machiavelli, why do you come to FredThreads and bash him every chance you get? I have never heard one positive thing about him from you. Makes one wonder what your motives are? You sound like a liberal plant my friend.
If the convention goes brokered, it may be an opportunity for the Conservatives. If the convention goes unbrokered, the convention may freeze out the Conservatives, then the Conservatives would definitely lose. I remain hopeful an actual Conservative will win the nomination, and the nominee will pick another Conservative as running mate. The message of those two Conservatives will be reported by the drive-by media (laugh) or Rush will help with getting the message out. I have not lost hope! But one can only anticipate the drive-bys next move. For two Conservative candidates on the Republican ticket would be the democrats and the drive-bys worst nightmare. Thus all that can be done is being done, by the democrats and drive-bys, to keep two Conservatives off the Republican ticket. Again, I still remain hopeful for a worst case nightmare for the democrats and drive-bys, with two Conservative candidates on the Republican ticket.
“.... another anti-immigration hero, Rep. Steve King.
AP plays with words.
anti-ILLEGAL immigration would have been correct; AP knew it and distorted King’s position.
