Why celebrate an addiction?

Illogical statement.

Grow a pair and summon up the intestinal fortitude to quit the smelly and obtrusive habit.

Great commentary to win and influence friends and opponents.

Your family and associates will thank you.

No, they won't.

I have the time, money and stamina to pursue my hobby of woodworking and have increased my skills in the building trades as I remodel my house, one room at a time.

As some one who smoked and drank his way through 45 years of home building and remodeling with a few major projects thrown in on the side, I can only tell ya what the engineer who actually built Seabrook Nuclear Station told me about thirty years ago: "Metesky, there's never been a project built anywhere in the world without drugs and alcohol, and by Jesus we're not gonna start here!"

I have little patience with the Smokers’ Lobby.

I have little patience with collectivists whose frame of reference leads to discerning disagreement by an individual as a "lobby".

I am a former smoker, quit now over 20 years.

Get outta here. None of the signs are there.

Was it “hard”? Yes. Do I believe that it was beneficial? Yes, in many ways. Food tastes better, my clothing, vehicles and home do not reek of tobacco smoke and I have not aged prematurely, as have some of my relatives who still light up. My general health is good and I am not wasting money on tobacco products. I have the time, money and stamina to pursue my hobby of woodworking...

As a sign of respect for you as an individual, please allow me to be perfectly forthright with you on this issue: who cares?

as I remodel my house, one room at a time.

I'm sixty years old. This past summer and fall, I helped haul sheetrock up two flights of stairs, then taped, mudded and sanded said sheetrock (3 rooms). After which I primed and painted said rooms. Been smoking for 50 years.

If you are basing it on something entirely different, would you tell us readers the history of your screen name?

"Apeosis" was taken.

I tried to write you privately and engage you in civil discourse. Your response was underwhelming, to say the least. (By the way your screen name is correctly spelled “Defarge”.)

I now realize that your coarseness and crudity knows no bounds. I think it is a defensive, defeatist pathology. You have the makings of a stalker. Do not go down that road.

Get some help.

Your tactic is one that's commonly employed by your type.

Innuendo, claims of victimhood and accusations of "stalking" when it was you who initiated the private mail, to which I replied exactly once.

And, as a good Stalinist, disagreement with you is characterized as prima facie evidence of mental illness.

I would propose that it is you in need of help, you coward.

"Most, if not nearly all conservatives, support freedom over slavery"

WTF? A true "conservative" doesn't believe in a Police State kicking in the doors of your business and telling you that you can no longer allow adults to engage in smoking. I'm sure there's something you're "addicted" to that I don't like, but I don't get the government to forbid it. You "don't like" smoking. Fine. There are millions of places that are smoke free that you can enjoy. Nobody is "forced" to go into a pub that allows smoking.

Ok, I’ll play your game. Should pubs be allowed? After all, there are alcoholics drinking there. Since your premise is addiction should be forbidden by the government, do you support banning alcohol? Why should I live in a society that would allow that? I don’t want to smell alcohol or listen to loud music. Therefore nobody should be allowed to have a business that permits this.

Now that this is winding down, what can be learned from the 100+ posts?

The Freepers who are observers of these goings on will either be convinced that the aggressive smokers have won the day by their brilliant display of empirical evidence or that they have been boorish participants at best. Let each reader decide for himself.

In the long run, I believe that the smokers will be the losers. Society is moving away from toleration of this intrusive addiction. In to the breach rush the opportunist politicians.

When local and state initiatives are proffered to restrict smoking, most will pass, with passive or active support from conservatives, including many Freepers.

The failure of the more level headed smokers on this thread to reign in the crazies will continue to hurt your cause. Be prepared to reap the whirlwind.

The flag and country crowd are at least trying to make a cogent argument. I just disagree with their conclusions.

Would you care to elaborate on your disagreement with the "flag and country" crowd? For example, could you explain why it is necessary and proper for the state to prohibit smoking on private property, as opposed to letting property owners set their own policies and leaving consumers free to choose?

You can respond by private mail if you'd prefer.

ROTFLOL Well done, dorothy. I considered “apogee” but rejected that as the height of speculative arrogance on my part. Now I’m off to see if “logorrheic” is a real word and what it means if it is. ;^)

The Crazies? Hey bub, you're the one using police power to ban activities that you don't like. Please give us an example where "crazy smokers" force people to do anything.

To those who wish to nitpick, demean and belittle, good luck. In the end you end up undercutting your own arguments by your behavior.

That would be quite a stinging rebuke if your first post to this thread didn't fit it to a T.

Gotta go, denizens of the smoky reaches. Its been fun but life calls.

Thank you to those who contacted me privately, both pro and con. Frank, honest and respectful discussion is alive on FreeRepublic, even though much of it must be carried on by Freepmail.

Be prepared to reap the whirlwind.

Or what? Tobacco taxes will be raised? Smoking will be banned in public places, private businesses and private residences? You are extremely uninformed and behind the curve if you think that will happen. It already has.

Perhaps you are entertaining delusions that tobacco will be outlawed altogether?
