United Van Lines, LLC has released its annual migration study on where it takes its clients to and from among the 48 contiguous states. The Mackinac Center for Public Policy has tested their data against actual census data going back to 1977 and found the two to be very highly correlated. This makes UVL data something of a leading migration indicator. According to UVL, a staggering 67.8 percent of its Michigan client traffic was outbound in 2007. That rate is an all-time record high, eclipsing the previous 1981 record of 66.9 percent during a year the Great Lake State suffered from an unemployment rate of 12.5 percent. Last month the U.S. Census Bureau reported that Michigan lost 30,500 citizens from July 2006 to July 2007.

“Last month the U.S. Census Bureau reported that Michigan lost 30,500 citizens..”
Let’s correct that...”Last month the U.S. Census Bureau reported that Michigan lost 30,500 PRODUCTIVE citizens...”
The welfare bums and various other government leeches are staying put. Michigan is a gravey train for the unproductive. Jenny the commie is doing her job to create a massive socialist welfare state in Michigan and position it as a Rat state for a generation.
Makes me sad. My home state.
I didn’t leave because I was compelled to...I left because marriage took me elsewhere. Yet I have no desire to move back.
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
For those of you looking for work who enjoy driving, UHaul et al are probably hiring couriers who can bring moving vehicles back to the state.
For those of you thinking of moving, good luck finding a van.
Nothing new there. I meet (ex-)Michiganders everywhere.
Thanks for the ping. It doesn’t surprise me. I know 2 families and 1 individual that left Michigan in 2007. One family and the individual went to Arizona. The other family went to Mississippi. All outstanding, productive hard-working Americans.
We moved last year to Kentucky from Michigan and we still haven’t sold our home. But the worst part is that my husband my get a new job that would put us back in that state.
You're being too kind. BTW, layoffs coming to GM.
My husband was offered a terrific job in Indianapolis last year--it was a tremendous opportunity. Unfortunately, his company wouldn't relocate us, and we couldn't risk sitting on two properties. Good thing we didn't try, either, because our house is still on the market.
We'd be glad to have you back, though!
HOw can we get Michigan to eliminate the State income tax and replace it with a “fair tax” - that would get the freeloaders at the cash register.
This wouldn’t be such a problem if the Granholms had been sent packing in 2006.
