Getting a (NC) Driver's License Will Soon Take Longer
WRAL ^ | January 9, 2008

Raleigh — Later this year, the way you get your driver's license will change. Whether you are renewing or getting a new license, it will take more than a simple trip down to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get it.

There are about 115 DMV offices across the state that make drivers licenses on-site. Because of a new law that takes effect July 1, the days of over-the-counter driver's license are numbered.

“You will walk out of our office with a temporary driving permit, good for 20 days,” said Wayne Hurder, of the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

“It sounds like it would be more of an inconvenience to wait 20 days for your license with your picture ID,” driver Brittany Adams said.

DMV officials said the extra wait time allows for more sophisticated background checks. If you pass all DMV tests, a license will be mailed to your permanent address within 20 days.

A post office box will not be accepted as a permanent address. American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) leaders see that as a problem for folks without permanent addresses.

Will people now be required to sign a name, rather than just an “X”?

Kansas does this now. I think the real reason is in order to produce a more sophisticated, tamper proof drivers license. Have you noticed security checkers at the airports using black light or IR flashlights on the new licenses?

Six years to late.

Better late than never. NC driver's licenses seemed to be the choice for many illegals.

70% of immigrants, legal and illegal, living in NJ seem to have North Carolina license plates. The other 30% have plates from Pennsylvania. I wonder why...

That ended about a year ago. I managed a dealership in NC and they stopped giving Drivers Liscences to illegals around October 06. The ones with DL’s still have them until they have to renew. It is a 5 year liscence so it will take awhile. With no liscence you can’t get insurance or register a car. As a result, expect to find one Illegal in the trailer park with 20 cars registered.....

About 7 or 8 years ago when I renewed my NC drivers license it appeared that 60-80% of the folks waiting were “recent arrivals from much farther south” (not from The South).

This was by actual head count on two different visits to DMV.

Do I still have time to buy a Class-A CDL, with tanker cert?

I can pay extra for overlooking the effective blindness in one eye!

I just created a scenario for my class based on some info from Epic.org on new licenses being tested in Arizona, Vermont, and Washington. Ostensibly, the reason for the added background info (you have to show proof of citizenship, among other things) is because drivers’ licenses will be used as ID for frequent border crossers. This is just the beginning.

From the article: A post office box will not be accepted as a permanent address. American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) leaders see that as a problem for folks without permanent addresses.

“So if they're not going to mail it to a post office box, then these people will not receive a license or identification card and it could impede their ability to vote,” said Sarah Preston, legislative coordinator for the ACLU.

So people in small towns, who had a PO Box address all their lives (like me)would not be able to renew their license?

This is where I find 911 addressing insidious. Is it the government's job to know where everyone is? Or just the criminals? We survived more than 200 years without the government knowing where every citizen lived and how to contact them.

Just as a matter of principle I prefer not to give my physical address, I prefer that the whackos that you run into out there (grocery checkers, bank clerk) not know exactly where my house is, and where I and my beautiful lives. I've been "pursued" (they call it stalking now) by some weirdos, and I just don't want to be providing my physical address to people. Isn't that my right as a law-abiding citizen of the USA?

The great authoritarian governments of the ages (USSR under Hitler, Germany under Stalin, Cuba under Castro) kept meticulous records on their citizens.

While I certainly oppose giving licenses to illegals, I'm also uncomfortable with the amount of information on me and my life that the government demands access to. I don't commit crimes, and shouldn't have anything to be afraid of with all this. On the other hand, there have been a couple of publicized cases here in PA where Law Enforcement Officers used their position (and power) against women they had some interest in. The controls aren't tight enough to keep the head cases away from information, whether they are police, 911 dispatcher, or state employee. Don't I have a right to privacy to prevent unwanted stalking?

That is really funny, you can bet money the cops know where you are, and you can no longer rent a post office box without proper ID. In short there is no privacy in the united states, unless you are and illegal.

The same is true for opening a securities account, no physical address for you AND your employer means you can’t open an account.

I had someone who works for a large federal government agency, trying to open an account that only had a PO Box for her actual place of employment. To the best knowledge of her and her boses, the Post Office hadn’t assigned an address for the location, even though the facility had been there more than 100 years.

In order to keep the feds happy, and to open her account, we just made up something that sounded plausible.
