DARE TO BE FAIR Rally a success in Myrtle Beach on January 10th!
It was a great day for the Fairtax in Myrtle Beach, SC yesterday! The FairTax Rally we had planned and worked for so many weeks came together better than I could have possibly imagined!

When the program was over, we lined up all of our supporters in full FairTax gear and began a Fairtax March to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, the site of the GOP presidential debate. Another 150-plus people joined in, and the marchers stretched out over at least two city blocks, truly a “sea” of FairTax support! The FairTax Bus was on hand, proudly blowing its horn as if acknowledging the moment!
The volunteers decorated the rally site with Fairtax Banners, helium balloons, American flags, etc., which provided a truly great atmosphere! We started with a live local band and food. Everyone in attendance received a special edition FairTax Sweatshirt, as well FairTax T-shirts, placards, hats, bumper stickers and more.
Two hundred fifty people travelled from Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and from all over the state of South Carolina to attend the rally. Some folks even drove in from northern Indiana, a 16 hour drive! All of these supporters paid their own way, and paid $25 per person admission to come to this Rally. For this they were treated with an awesome event. We sincerely thank the 30-40 volunteers who helped plan,
organize, and implement the FairTax Rally.
We had 4 U.S. Senate Candidates for South Carolina speak (Buddy Witherspoon, Mark McBride, Tim Carnes, John Cina), and a North Carolina candidate for U.S. Congress (Will Breazeale), as well as local Myrtle Beach City Councilman Randall Wallace. Then we had the honor of receiving a call from the FairTax National Communications Director, Ken Hoagland, who gave a very motivating speech to our FairTax supporters. Ken also introduced our keynote speaker, none other than Georgia U.S. Congressman John Linder, the sponsor of the FairTax bill. Our supporters were absolutely thrilled to see Congressman Linder. John Linder truly is one of the greatest statesmen we have left in this Country, and for our supporters to get the opportunity to meet him was absolutely a magical moment.

When we arrived in front of the convention center, we met and greeted the supporters for other campaigns. If you added up all the supporters from all six Republican candidates, they “paled” in comparison to our FairTax supporters who were chanting “Fairtax Now” and “Dare to be Fair”. We not only had the most supporters of any campaign, we had the most vocal and passionate supporters!
The night was topped off with a special visit from presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who truly was in awe of the number of FairTax supporters present. Mr. Huckabee discussed the merits of the FairTax, and once again endorsed the FairTax as the best tax reform plan out there, bar none.
Every FairTax supporter left the rally feeling extremely good about the accomplishments of the Fairtax, but also understanding that we still have much work to do. While we can never rest on our laurels, for this day we accomplished what we wanted to -- to get as much exposure as possible for the FairTax! Mission accomplished, and a great job by all FairTax supporters who were involved!

There sure are a lot of “retirees” in those pictures. I guess they didn’t get the memo about the FT being unfair to them.
So it would seem!
I am a retiree and have run my numbers on the FairTax Calculator every way I can think of and have yet to find a scenario where I don't come out better under the FairTax than I do under the present system.
Could it be that the memo was wrong?

I ran my numbers, and they come out ‘equal’, but the calculator assumes I pay social security and medicare taxes on my military pension, interest and dividends [which is false].
When I manually put that back into my “true purchasing power”, I come out $2800 short spending retirement income. That’s something that Boortz continues to basically ignore [or make fun of the callers] by saying ‘read the book [good pitch - WRONG] and we spent $20M studying this”. Well, the calculator proved me right.
I got 790 on my math SAT, majored in engineering at “Drexel Institutute of Technology” [poor mans MIT] before it becamse a university for one year. Spent 26 years in the Navy working electronics.
I pay federal taxes on my military pension. Some with a disabilities also get concurrent receipt [tax exempt] or a percent of their pension is tax free. Those people would really get screwed unless the pay was adjusted up front.
Unless somewhere in the book it talks about ‘extra comp’ for pensions, won’t work, won’t fly as written. Find me something other than, trust me it’s fair before it will get m support. In fact, I turn Boortz off some days after he gets a call from someone living off IRA’, savings, social security, etc and gives them the ‘spiel’ - you already pay the taxes - WRONG - I have more money than those working, because I don’t pay SS & MED on pension and dividends.
Find me something REAL to prove me wrong.
I'm not Boortz but perhaps I can explain what he is talking about when he says that you are already paying taxes. Even if everything you have said is true (I have absolutely NO reason to doubt that it is) everything you buy today that was produced in the U.S. carries in it's retail price all the taxes, and all the costs of dealing with those taxes, of every set of hands which have touched the process of producing them. They are hidden from you but you do pay them whether or not you realize it and I suspect that this is what Boortz is referring to. ALL of that would go away under the FairTax which would make our domestically produced goods and services a good deal less expensive for us to buy and FAR more competitive around the world as well.
Did you notice the "assumptions" tab on the calculator? If not I would hope you would go back and redo your calculations using whatever reasonable number you chose for price drops under the Fairtax.
I am a Viet Nam vet, retired (not from the military), and, as I said, come out better under the FairTax under ever condition I can think of.
Go get ‘em.

That should tell you all you need to know.
There are flaws in the FT, as there would be in any system of taxation. Retirees are probably more likely to be hurt than others, especially if they have all of their retirement funds in after tax accounts.
Those issues, and yours, should be addressed in the final write ups of the bill. That is what congress is supposed to do - debate these issues before enacting the legislation.
First, a Taxman Bravo Zulu! to each person who planned and attended the DARE TO BE FAIR Rally in Myrtle Beach, SC on 1/10/08. Great job!
Now to the point of my post: I’m a retiree, also, Bigun, and FRankly, I don’t give a damn about how the FairTax affects me personally — the FairTax is not about my personal finances.
I’ll do better under the FairTax than under the Marxist inspired progressive income tax, but I have more compelling reasons to support the FairTax:
The FairTax is about FReedom!
The FairTax is about throwing the evil, Marxist inspired, LIEberal/Socialist supported progressive income tax on the asheap of History, where it rightfully belongs!
The FairTax is about abolishing the IRS!
It is about personal economic growth!
It is about a better future for our kids and grandkids!
It is about a stronger, more vibrant American economy!
It is about fairness!
It is about ending class warfare!
It is about ending the stranglehold special interest groups and the Inside the Evil Beltway Bandits have on our Congress and state legislatures!
And, those reasons, alone, ought to get Americans fired up to the point that massive pressure is put on the Congress to enact H.R. 25 ASAP.
I’m sure there are other postitive attributes that the FairTax is about — these are the ones that mean the most to me and come to mind as I write this.
Surely other FairTax supporters can add a few?

My problem, why not just say, some people using savings to live off of [and pensions with no FICA] may be impacted, but for good of country with “all the benefits seniors receive” [social security, medicare, prescription drugs, etc], so what.
Fine, tell me the truth, don’t insult my intelligence. Common sense says if it’s revenue neutral, it can’t benefit everyone.
The fair tax calculator makes no sense for retirees. For one thing — it doesnt have a listing for medical costs — which are taxed.
Very strange. Since under the fairtax, medical costs such as surgery, chemotherapy, dialysis, diabetic supplies, all medical cost, pay the high sales tax, why weren’t those thing included?
Sure — you just avoid listing things that people will be taxed under fairtax — the calculator makes it look great. People are easily fooled.
Did you know insurance premiums are taxed? Even car insurance? Health insurance? Life insurance premiums too.
Funny how the calculator doesn’t even list these things.
