A 35-year veteran of the Cass County Sheriff’s Department will remain on duty while authorities investigate how he accidentally discharged his weapon while using the bathroom Thursday at the Cass County Courthouse.

Detective Dean Wawers was in the men’s restroom on the main floor of the courthouse about 12:45 p.m. when his standard-issue handgun – a .40-caliber Glock Model 23 – accidentally discharged, Sheriff Paul Laney said Friday during a news conference.

Laney said Thursday’s incident should not have occurred, because law enforcement personnel receive training on how to handle weapons.

So you know.

Just a guess, but I suspect something pulled the trigger. I love my Glocks, but I’m sick of people telling me Glocks have 3 safeties. B.S. Pull the trigger and it goes bang. That’s why I got them.

What are the “internal” safeties on a Glock?

Bet he was looking in the mirror doing his “Barney Fife quick draw”, while giving his steeliest Clint Eastwood glare, and things went downhill from there.

Give this cop a break. We’ve all had a misfire. Mine was back when I was a teen. But it was in a car at the drivein not a bathroom.

How hard do you have to strain for your Glock to go off?

He may have been using a non-standard holster for the Glock, and then it fired when he was “adjusting it” taking down or up his trousers. Use only Glock holsters for Glocks.....even though they look cheap.

Glock has 3 safeties:

1) Trigger safety (you all can see it in the midle of the trigger)
2) Drop safety(it is in the trigger mechanism housing)
3) Firing pin safety, better known as safety plunger (blocks the firing pin)

These 3 safety features is what is known as glock safe action, the only way a glock can fire is by pulling the trigger period, you can hammer with it, drop it, even be involved in a car accident and the inertia wouldn’t fire it!

I’ll take a picture of my glock cleaning mat in which is clearly explained with figures how the system works, these safeties engage secuentially during the travel of the trigger pull.

Glocks come standard with a 5 1/2 pound trigger pull weight, which is typically half as much for guns in double action mode. This is a striker fired system and is tantamount to being half cocked. The pull is the same for every shot.

Sounds like a Glock NY trigger job was in order to help prevent the ND.

“Glock has 3 safeties:”

One of the first things they teach kids in hunter safety classes is that anything mechanical can fail. That includes the safety.

Yeah, a lot of jurisdictions use the 8lb triggers. Why buy one if your gonna do that?

I know you like your Sigs, but I bought Glocks due to simplicity. Of course, I’b be very tempted to get a 220 for a fun gun for range and full sized carry.

Dam I hate it when that happens.
Then again, when I'm in the Men's Room I don't play the, 'Oh yeah, bet ya mine's bigger than your's', game.

I would bet it had something to do with the holster, too. Unless he was...er...playing with it in the restroom...
