Could a description of Mary Jo Kopechne's death in a car accident possibly not mention Ted Kennedy till five paragraphs later?
Yes.
That's how the Times Leader, the Wilkes Barre, PA based newspaper reported the passing away at age 89 of Mary Kopechne's mother Gwen, a local resident.
Here's the opening paragraph [emphasis added]:
A mother who lost her daughter in a well-publicized automobile accident in Massachusetts nearly 39 years ago was remembered Saturday as a caring woman who loved talking, drinking coffee and making pancakes for breakfast.

If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age.
Charles Pierce in a January 5 Boston Globe Magazine article. Kopechne drowned while trapped in Kennedys submerged car off Chappaquiddick Island in July 1969, an accident Kennedy did not report for several hours.
It was not an accident - it was murder ...
And Americans have paid a big price for his freedom to hold elected office ever since.

May Mrs. Gwen Kopechne rest in peace. I’m sure that it was very difficult in her remaining years living with the knowledge that her beautiful daughter, Mary Jo, was murdered by Ted Kennedy.
That neckbrace amazed me. “I’m the victim” Kennedy.
The voters in Mass are the dumbest humans on this planet.
If Ted Kennedy drove a Volkswagen, he'd be President today
It floats.
The way our body is built, we'd be surprised if it didn't. The sheet of flat steel that goes underneath every Volkswagen keeps out water, as well as dirt and salt and other nasty things that can eat away at the underside of a car. So it's watertight at the bottom. And everybody knows it's easier to shut the door on a Volkswagen after you've rolled down the window a little.
That proves it's practically airtight on top. If it was a boat, we could call it the Water Bug. But it's not a boat, it's a car.
And, like Mary Jo Kopechne, it's only 99 and 44/100 percent pure. So it won't stay afloat forever. Just long enough. Poor Teddy. If he'd been smart enough to buy a Volkswagen, he never would have gotten into hot water.

And they still re-elect a man who could not hit a bridge with an 8 ft wide car.
Pitiful. And I still won’t vote for someone from Mass for Prez.
Kopechne suffocated.
Kennedy accidentally forgot to act like a decent human being, and accidentally left her to drown so he could save himself from bad PR.
We can rest assured that there’s a special place in hell waiting for Teddy K.In fact, given the records of various Kennedy males (women paralyzed, raped, murdered,an under-age girl diddled, heroin possession, etc) I’ll wager that that special place is designed to hold a number of Kennedys.
How Mary Jo's parents must have suffered over the years. I don't know if it's true, but I once heard the Kennedy's paid her parents only $25,ooo at the time to shut them up. It's too bad the parents never did a TV interview to trash the bum.
My vote for Chutzpah of the Year 2003 Award. “If only he hadn’t killed her she’d have been a real fan.” Apparently Mr. Pierce was serious. I don’t think these people live on the same planet as I do, and if they do I wish they didn’t.
