Inside the Freep poll

Check out the above graphic, taken from today's Detroit Free Press.

Romney's lead is clearly being powered by two constituencies — older voters and those in metro Detroit.

This is good news for the obvious reasons: older voters are reliable voters and the population center of the mitten state is centered around Motown.

What's more, it underscores something I noticed when, in St. Joseph out on Lake Michigan last night, Tagg Romney briefly took the mic from his dad and asked all those in the audience who knew of his grandfather to raise their hand. About half the crowd did, and naturally most of those hands were from among the audience's older members.

Bottom line: There is a reason, in addition to genuine admiration, why Romney invokes his father on the stump, in mail, on TV here and why he went to see the former governor's portrait Friday in the state capitol. George Romney offers a degree of credentialing to son Mitt in the eyes of older Michiganders, and he's probably best recalled around Detroit, where he ran an auto company and lived before and after serving as governor.

Also of note in the numbers is where Huck's strength lies. Not surprisingly, he runs best in Christian conservative-heavy western Michigan. But he also does best among younger voters. This has become a pattern and is something David Kirkpatrick has a smart story about in today's Times.

McCain's strengths reflect the extensive grassroots tilling done by his organization here, led by John Yob, since 2000. McCain does best in the rural parts of the state, including western and northern Michigan.

TOPICS: Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: elections; mccain; mi; polls; romney
In 1994, George Romney was a big hit with the older folks in MA as well. Wherever he went, the crowd loved him. It's not surprising that the older generation in MI still remembers him so warmly.

“Huck’s strength lies. Not surprisingly, he runs best in Christian conservative-heavy western Michigan”

This doesn’t surprise me. I have noticed that that I have heard some Christians close to me so that they plan on voting for Huck. The fact that he has a good personality plus the fact he claims to be Christian appears to be enough. Unfortunately, I don’t think they have been paying attention to politics to understand the implications of things that he says that are extreamly liberal sounding. He even says these things during the debates. Such as government is here to solve problems. I can’t help but thinking Huck is just yet one more closet friend of the Clintons. When Huck said the Clinton Machine is a sausage grinder, he wasn’t kidding. I wish Christians would really pay attention to the content of what Huck is saying and not just get swept away by his claims to be a Christian and his sparkling personality.

I think it will all come to who gets out to vote. I think Romney is going to pull this one out!
