I'm hearing word from a friend of mine working on the campaign in SC that Fred is closing very very strong and these polls from SurveyUSA, Rasmussen, and PPP showing him at 16-17% are lagging indicators.
Right now he thinks its closer to Mccain 25, Huckabee 23, Thompson 20, Romney 15..
Big question those.. If Thompson polls 20% and finishes 3rd, can he claim momentum and go on to Florida?! I hope so!
**Right now he thinks its closer to Mccain 25, Huckabee 23, Thompson 20, Romney 15.. **
This is how I said this would pan out — and I said it two weeks ago.
However, I just may change my mind:
McCain,
Thompson,
Huckabee,
Romney.
It sure is looking like this is what will happen!
I am not trolling for votes for anyone. In fact, I hope Thompson wins tomorrow in SC. I am only saying the following, which I believe is accurate but regrettable: IF Thompson drops out of the race due to a poor showing in SC, and IF he decides to endorse anyone, he will endorse McCain. National Review agrees with me as well.
I know this opinion is infuriating to the Fred-heads, and I believe it is a tragedy too, but all the invective in the world thrown at me doesn’t make my opinion any less viable.
Most analysts agree with me, because Senate colleagues have mostly endorsed McCain — including Coburn, Phil Gramm, and other conservatives of large prestige. Jack Kemp, too, the supply-sider.
Fred isn’t going to endorse anyone because he is going to be the nominee.
Perhaps when John McCain drops out he can endorse his friend Fred Thompson.
However, Fred has made immigration a major issue in his campaign, and because of that he would not endorse John McCain under any circumstance.
Regardless of how Fred does in South Carolina or elsewhere he will not drop out period, because he’s banking on a brokered convention. But if he were to, I do not think he would endorse anyone.
The only person in the race worthy of an endorsement is Fred.
I hope he gets one from Rush Limbaugh today.
More concerned about what we can do to kill McCain’s campaign.
I would rather Thompson - if he bows out - just say that he will endorse the eventual nominee rather than specifically anyone at this point.
“If Thompson polls 20% and finishes 3rd, can he claim momentum and go on to Florida?”
Sadly, no.
Incorrect! Thanks for playing.
Not that I'm aware.
Today is Open Line Friday on Rush Limbaugh.
Time for everyone to get calling!
Who do you think he'll endorse? McCain?
It is actually from a scene in the very first episode of the Beverly Hillbillys. (Jed talking to the Oil Man Mr. Brewster when he visits them in their cabin).
Thank you so much. Once Huckabee started talking about popcorn-popper fried squirrel, I couldn't be sure that he wouldn't bring up possum innards at some point.
I’m sorry, I’m just not sure the world is ready for state dinners featuring fried squirrel. Those in the cult of the Bee, should get a sense of humor, because if he wins, those are the kind of jokes you will be hearing for four years.
BUT...The big news here is that Fred is within striking distance of either 2nd or 1st in SC. Let’s do what we can to help him pull it off. Please call SC for Fred.
If Fred is closing fast then his South Carolina primary contract is a bargain on Intrade at 1.1%.

“There will be Fred Heads here Sat after the polls close and the votes are counted who will be claiming victory if Fred manages to scrape a 4th place finish with his customary 12% of the vote”
I’m fanatic for Fred but SC is where he’s put his line in the sand. If he isn’t 1st or a strong 2nd there then this is not FRed’s year.
Fred may be within striking distance somewhere, but I really don’t know that it is in South Carolina.
Yesterday, only Zogby had Thompson in 3rd place, all of the other polls had him in 4th place. Todays Zogby poll puts him back into 4th place, so it may take a miracle.

These polls are not showing Fred’s recent rise. He is doing far better than these indicate.
Those making calls into SC are finding far more support for him than you are hearing about.
Remember...Miracles CAN happen.
“Im fanatic for Fred but SC is where hes put his line in the sand. If he isnt 1st or a strong 2nd there then this is not FReds year.”
I didn’t mean to imply that every Fred Head would continue to cheerlead. I would bet though that there are more than a few that will claim Fred never said SC was his line in the sand.
Heck Fire you can go back read this thread and some of that thinking is already showing up. IMHO it’s because Fred hasn’t exactly caught fire. He does seem to have moved up a few points in the SC polls though. So the more robust Fred Heads have already started to lower the bar. Fred doesn’t need to win in SC just finish a close second......I’d wager the definition of close will go through the ringer, possibly the definition of second as well. Then a whole bunch of links to blogs will be posted as proof that the Fred Surge is in fact well under way, and Fred can easily win FL even though he hasn’t moved in a national poll in 3 months, and his best finish so far was 2nd in WY. I don’t really have anything against Fred, and could easily enough vote for him should he get the nomination. Sadly I don’t think he can. Also sadly it’s in the nature of the someone who’s snarky to point out flaws in any plan. Most of what I’ve seen here has been along the lines of “Fred could win, if.....” Big old word...if. We have a saying down in Southeast Texas that if frogs carried pistols they wouldn’t be afraid of snakes.
I’m not setting the standard, Fred did. He said something on Hannity this week (Wed?) to the effect that if people in SC don’t want him, then probably the nation is not looking for a Fred Presidency. (very rough paraphrase, I don’t take notes while driving).
