The Campaign Spot

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Jim Geraghty

Now There's Evidence of a Fred Surge

Well, after yesterday's brouhaha over whether Thompson was really surging... American Research Group does show what I would all a real surge, rising from 13 percent in the poll taken January 15-16 to 21 percent in the poll taken January 17-18.

Among Republicans, he ties McCain with 22 percent. McCain is way ahead in independents.

A finish like that - behind McCain with 26 percent and Huckabee with 36 percent, but beating Romney by 9, would be plenty reason to stay in the race.

The 5 inches of snow forecast for “Up Country” cannot be good news for anybody else but McCain.

We’ll see who is more committed, Fredheads or Hucksters.

Fred's supporters in Michigan helped deliver a victory to Romney over McCain. Now Mitt's supporters in South Carolina need to do the same for Fred. Stopping McCain and knocking Huckabee out of the race is a common goal we all share, and only Fred can do that — today in South Carolina.

Conservatives unite behind Fred and Mitt.
Fred in South Carolina, Mitt in Nevada!
United we stand, divided we fall.

Is this saying that Huck cannot be beat in SC, but that McPain will survive to fight it out with Giuliani in FL?

The first thing anyone needs to understand is that South Carolinians are hardy folks.

Therefore it is highly unlikely that suddenly they're going to let weather get in their way.

we all need HUCK supporters to go to Fred Thompson. If Thompson does well, but merely delivers a victory to Huckabee and runs behind him, he’s not the southern candidates and he is still toast.

I do hope Thompson can trump Huckabee. Heck, I hope he beats McCain and Huckabee both.

Lesser Of Evils In GOP Beats Hillary And Bill
Thomas Sowell

What is wrong with this year's candidates?

The short answer is that most of the Republicans are questionable and all three leading Democrats are dangerous.

The only real conservative candidate is former Sen. Fred Thompson.... If he drops out, it's hard to see whom conservative Republican voters will support — in the primaries or in the general election in November.

Yep, I am hoping for any alignment that can knock McCain, Romney, and the Huckster out of the race.
Probably in that order.

Here, let me help you understand what the article says:

Fred Thompson is campaigning to become our next President of the United States.

Fred Thompson is in it to win it. Period.

If McCain is at 22% and tied with Fred, with Republicans, then why bother with the 26% figure? SC is a closed primary - Independents can’t vote, IIRC.

Thank you Lancey, for the quote from Thomas Sowell. It really bears repeating:

"The only real conservative candidate is former Sen. Fred Thompson."

If this primary race shows anything, it’s that the polls aren’t worth a damn. I really hope Fred is surging, but I won’t trust the prediction until the ballots are counted.

As a transplanted Northerner I can tell you that Southern folks don’t do snow very well. 2 inches on the ground and the stores are out of milk and bread.

McCain is apparently popular with the over 50 crowd. While they are usually faithful voters, they are also the ones most freaked out by the weather. (Such as my Mother in law, who yesterday told me the Packers/Giants game should be postponed because it would be so cold in Green Bay on Sunday)
