FRED THOMPSON, IN OR OUT? (Mother in hospital)
PowerLine ^ | January 19, 2008

Posted on 01/19/2008 8:07:10 PM PST by restornu

Fred Thompson just spoke to his supporters in South Carolina, where he appears headed for a weak third or fourth place finish. Thompson thanked everyone and then spoke about America and conservatism's contribution to it. He did not talk about Florida or being in the race to stay.

Word is that Thompson will return to Tennessee to visit his mother in the hospital. While he's there, presumably, he'll consider his options. Frankly, and I say this with regret, it's difficult to see the case for him remaining in the race.

So clever you are. Now, if you could only come up with a thought to go along with your emotions, you could almost be relevant yourself.

LOL! You fling off a post in the heat of emotion and include an insult, then you get it thown back in your silly face, and then you come back with this. What a bloody fool. I would advise you to think clearly before you post so as not to suffer public humiliation. On the other hand, you may be into that.....hmmmmmmm

Fred Thompson isn't formally out yet but he is as good as gone. Thanks for trying, Fred. I had not heard that his mother is in the hospital, only that he intended to visit her in Tennessee.

Fred can't say the things he has said and then do a 180 and support McCain. How anybody can be concerned about illegal immigration, which Fred says he is, and still vote for McCain - or Huckabee - well, I can't understand that at all. And beyond immigration and border security, there are many other issues where McCain fails the conservative, America first test. So no, no way can Fred endorse McCain iunless he has been lying to us all along and has been in the race only to help McCain.

Romney is the only sensible, America first choice for Fred to send support to. Fred says it's all about what's good for America and his daughter, etc. So we shall see if he has been BS'ing us all along or not.

I just don’t understand how he isn’t beating Romney, at least

Could it possibly be that the States that have voted so far allows "cross-over" votes? ...

Naaaa...that couldn't be it. /s

McCain would want someone a decade younger

You are aware that McCain is older than Thompson, aren't you?

How many States have votes so far? How many States are left?

There’s no reason for him to drop out before Super Tuesday...that’s when the voice of the people will be heard!

Voting for Mitt in Florida is a wasted vote.

Mitt has moved down among most people here.

Rudy is still #1 with 9 days to go, and just starting to spend BIG.
My prediction for Florida:

1 Rudy
2 M Cain
3 Romney
4 Huck and Fred in a near tie - One may break out and challenge #3
5 everyone else

Go back and read the posts. Holding that an individual renders oneself irrelevant by casting away a vote is a point of view that most objective people would take. Writing "in" the name of a non candidate is an emotional act.

You already know that.

To keep the Arkansas snake-charmer from winning is one good reason.

Thank you. I'm definitely in the "laugh rather than cry" mode. I mean it seems like we're in an alternate universe when John "maverick" McCain wins South Carolina (and Huck close behind to boot). This is the Republican Party?! (SC dudes, what have you done with our party?)

(mav-er-ick) - what a liberal calls a Republican who consistently betrays his party and its conservative principles.

I believe that rationality and truth will ultimately prevail. This should not be our candidate:

I still have faith that his "Dean Scream" moment is just around the corner ...

The real John McCain?

Fred, hang in there! We need you man.

I think Fred is too close to John McCain to even consider endorsing anyone else.. ....

What is this stuff on FR? They served in the senate together; they didn’t share spit. Too close? ferheavenssake...

It's common knowledge that McCain and Fred were very close friends when they served together--and that the friendship continued after Fred left the Senate. By close I meant close personally.

That said, their voting records are more similar than different. McCain Feingold was called McCain Feingold Thompson for some time. I'm not sure it would have passed without Fred's advocacy for it. Fortunately, Fred admits that it didnt work as planned.

Of course, of course. But they are only about a half decade apart. IIRC Fred is 65 and McCain 71.

If McCain gets the nomination, my guess is that he'd want someone in his 50s. Just MHO.

Why? Because Fred is too old...and too tired...and doesn’t have any fire in the belly? (I’m so glad this is the only argument people can use against him).

Besides...I don’t believe Fred would take the job of running-mate with McCain, they have differing views that would stand in the way.

Fred is in this to be President...not VP

No, nothing specific to Fred. It’s what I think the campaign strategy would be...that given McCain’s age, his advisors would tell him to run with someone considerably younger. But not as young as Obama.

I suspect you are right that Fred would say no to the VP slot.
