Fred Out of Thursday's Debate; Doesn't Plan on Endorsing
National Review Campaign Spot Blog ^ | 1/22/08 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 01/22/2008 7:36:38 AM PST by Callahan

I spoke to one of my Thompson sources.

He's still with his ailing mother. "He's just being a good son."

He has not spoken to any other campaign or any other candidates, nor does he intend to at this time.

He will not endorse, I am told by this source close to Thompson.

I am also told, "he has no interest in a vice presidency or a cabinet position." At an "appropriate time" he will outline his plans for the near future.

This source believes that the race has demonstrated that whatever happens from here on out, the GOP has to stand for consistent conservative policies across the board.

At one point, I asked this source if the attitude was, 'if you can't be Reagan, be Goldwater,' and the source responded, "exactly."

If I were a betting man, I would bet on him departing the race in the not-too-distant future.

Endorsing McCain is what Id be worried about.

Stop worrying about that. 99% of Fredheads aren't going to vote for McCain. We weren't for Fred because of his stint on Law and Order, it was the issues, man. Now, why would Fredheads sign onto the McCain campaign when McCain has been on the wrong side on so many issues in the past? Answer: Easy, they won't.

He effectively just withdrew from the campaign. Just stating it from an objective point of view. I would have thought this fight for conservatism was more important.

I’ve moved on but I guess you need to club these other people in the head before they can see the forrest.

Sounds like while you were wandering around in the forest you ran smack into one of the trees.

Stand strong, Fred!

Crap! FRed needs SOMEONE in charge of disseminating information AND rallying the troops!

FRED!!! More than 2000 posts on your blog. NO ONE IS RESPONDING to your most loyal supporters!!!

Where is Karen??? She should be on every talk show, radio & TV, that will have her. Updates should be sent out every 2-4 hours to ALL of your County Crusaders! Public postings, from the CAMPAIGN, should be made.

BYPASS THE MSM, and make it YOUR game!

AARRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Truthfully, how would Mitt have any credibility when he is circumventing the tax code and helping others do this while he lays off 100,000 people to line his pockets???

Are you sure you're in the right place? This is a conservative forum. It doesn't say he was circumventing the tax code. It appears the investors were taking advantage of things in the tax code, not circumventing it. That's just good sense. If I had money and I wanted to avoid paying 40% of what I made in taxes, I might be looking into Cayman banks, too. And if a company is struggling, they might need to lay some people off to become profitable. Companies do not exist to give people jobs. They exist to PRODUCE goods and services. If they don't do that efficiently, they DIE.

Fred Thompson News
Fred’s mother is ill and her condition has deteriorated today. I ask that everyone and the candidates give the family space to make their own decisions about the process, and respect whatever his wishes may be.

UPDATE at 9:00 pm: To clear up some rumors floating around, just got word from the campaign:
1. Thompson has not pulled out of Florida’s debate Thursday night yet. Fox News is wrong in their reporting yet again, at this stage.
2. Yes, she has been ill for a while, but has improved since earlier today.

Please pass on this somewhat more positive news.

What is wrong with tax avoidance? The article says that Bain Capital helped investors who “qualified” to minimize their U.S. income tax.

Since when is paying more tax than the law requires a sign of intelligence?

.Endorsing McCain is what Id be worried about.

Why do you guys worry about Fred endorsing McCain if Fred's support is so weak? Fred has no support according to you guys, so an endorsement for McCain wouldn't make any difference anyhow. If your candidate were any good, you wouldn't have to worry about who Fred might endorse.

family comes first.

notice how he is keeping family private in contrast to others who use it like any other resume padder.

Bears repeating.

If my mother was hospitalized with pneumonia at age 90, I’d be with her. Do you even realize how sick one must be these days to qualify for hospitalization and utilization review??

There was word last night she was showing some improvement. But should we expect a candidate to run the risk of not ever seeing or speaking with his mom again should she die while he’s running around the campaign trail?

Would you really do that yourself?

In this case Rush and Anne are wrong. Romney is a loser as are most of the others. Romney will not be able to get enough support from any segment of the Republican party (except for those of his own faith). The same is true of Huck.

You are so right. It amazes me that two people of such high intelligence cannot comprehend public opinion polls.

Mitt is unelectable. It is that simple.

Honestly... in something this important, where thousands of volunteers have spent time and money... where there's so much at stake... I would have taken a few hours to fly to the debate, then fly back to the hospital...

The stakes are too high otherwise... If it was his daughter, or wife, he can quit the campaign altogether and no one can say a thing, we'd all be sympathetic... But she's 90. Sorry, that's just how I feel... Some things are more imortant, like the fate of our nation.

Don’t forget that right off the bat, Mitt is going to save the government 1.6 million by not taking a salary during his term as President. What other President has offered this? Calling Fred??? Your a rich actor still get dividends from movies and tv shows.

Come on Steve. Can't he stay in long enough to run Huckabee's money out?

Huckabee has no shot anymore he's run out of evangelicals in all except for about 1 or 2 more states. No worries at all there. I hung in there with Fred until Saturday night when he got very little traction after working his butt off in one of the more conservative states.

The result signalled me to jump on, what I believe to be, the next best conservative left in the race, Romney. I know many think he's a Rhino. I don't happen to think that. I believe he's a good man. Of course I also know what the NES would think. lol.

I also believe I took Fred's word for it. He made SC a testing ground. Being outvoted by 2-1 by both McCain and Huck isn't what we or he expected. Staying in at this point just gets him his 10-17% per race and as a result McCains' votes become inflated.

Just got an e-mail from his HQ urging everyone to call and ask him to stay in-HERE'S THE NUMBER - (571) 730-1000.

The nice young man told me he has no plans and is by his mom's bedside-as it should be.

IMHO, the Huckster will soon drop out and Fred will get most of their votes. He will probably get most of Hunters votes (add 1% to his vote), and Rudy will soon drop out. McCain Romney and Fred wouild then be the last men standing. I have to believe that Fred wouldd win that.
