Odds are pretty good that what is happening here is that failure of a campaign is a very hard thing to accept and face. An ill mother, probably dying given her age, becomes a double whammy that makes life for Thompson pretty damned bad right now.

It would be fairly easy to ignore the first painful thing in life and concentrate only on the second when such a situation appears.

Fred Thompson News
Fred’s mother is ill and her condition has deteriorated today. I ask that everyone and the candidates give the family space to make their own decisions about the process, and respect whatever his wishes may be.

UPDATE at 9:00 pm: To clear up some rumors floating around, just got word from the campaign:
1. Thompson has not pulled out of Florida’s debate Thursday night yet. Fox News is wrong in their reporting yet again, at this stage.
2. Yes, she has been ill for a while, but has improved since earlier today.

Ron Paul is the only viable conservative in the race. I hear him smeared as a Liberal here. He’s never voted to raise taxes and he’s never voted for a bill that violated the constitution. How does talking sense about where our stupid and ruinous foreign policy has gotten us qualify him as a Liberal?

She's not on her deathbed, though I realize anything like a flu or cold could eventually lead to death at that age

That having been said, it again shows he's not into this 100%... Never was IMHO... Someone who puts being with his 90 year old mom who he can't make better, ahead of the country, is making a bad judgement call, IMHO

“Tell that to the ones who lost those jobs and votes.
Tell that to their families, who also vote.
He will project the image of the “MAN WHO LAID ME OFF”.”

Geez, I can see why you call yourself aMorePerfectUnion. Do you belong to one? You sure sound like you do.

There’s an easy response to that one. You can say, with equal correctness, that the people who got to keep their jobs and their families are very grateful. Remember, when a company goes under, EVERYBODY gets fired. Then you can smack the lib on the backswing by saying “look how pessimistic they are - they focus on the negative, and not the positive”

You’re sick.

Like FRed’s going to violate his mother’s privacy and send out a press release: “Hey, leave me alone. My Mother’s dying, you ghouls!!”

Thanks. I call The More Perfect Union, “America”

as in...

In order to form a More Perfect Union...

But I am arguing that the Democrats have an easy target
in Flop Romney - and it will sell big time.

There's no bigger FRedhead than I in the entire U.S.of A.

However, I hope FRed gets off the pot or you know what, and I say that with the utmost respect.

If this is the big announcement that was supposedly coming out today, it is certainly disappointing to supporters and potential donors who are left hanging and befuddled.

While I'm sure Fred and others are the type of men who put family first, this is major league hardball they're in. The show must go on, at least to a minimum extent. Holing up is not an alternative.

I'm sorry, but I don't buy that her being ill is the reason he may or may not drop out of the biggest political race in the world, although it undoubtedly may play a part.

There's other factors afoot here, maybe money matters and gloomy poll predictions in Florida and elsewhere. However, I hope Thompson doesn't keep his supporters in a kind of tortuous suspended animation......and keep us running to the computer or TV every two minutes to see what's happening.

Yes, I'm blessed with utmost have patience, but this ambivalence is not helpful to FRed's campaign.

This is reality, not sentimentality.

flaggedlady,

It has absolutely nothing to do with whether it was illegal.
It has to do with what he did and what the public perception
is. It makes him even more unlikable.

You Mittiacs really like to shoot the messenger and ignore
the facts, don’t you?

She’s 90 years old... I find it hard to find that anywhere near a tragic situation

He is a spamming ass surrender monkey or something to that effect, I forgot what Jim Rob said.

I think he was being too kind. He is a clown, a caricature with support from the dark recesses of every part of the political fringe, left and right. Despite a couple of photo ops and thank you signatures from Reagan, he has little else to do with Conservatism. He is at best a libertarian.

Lay off the bong hits and save your Skittles...

I’ve moved on but I guess you need to club these other people in the head before they can see the forrest.

Come on Steve. Can't he stay in long enough to run Huckabee's money out?

We need an executive/businessman as POTUS.

I would have a hard time supporting Romney even half-heartedly. Not because I think he has moral failings or is mentally instable or is a dyed-in-the-wool social liberal (Huckabee, McCain, Giuliani, in that order!), but in part BECAUSE he is an executive businessman.

When's the last time you knew of an executive or businessman who embraced, let alone relied on, a "limited management" principle in dealing with the employees of his business? I suggest that if you think a guy like Romney wouldn't subconsciously at least consider taxpayers his "employees" and government programs his management tools, you are deceiving yourself and do not know many execs or MBA types.

Michael Eisner is an executive/businessman. Richard Branson is an exectuvie/businessman. Bill Gates is an executive/businessman. The guys who own the enormously successful Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream are executive businessmen. And THEY WOULD ALL be crappy presidents, just like Romney would be a crappy president, and here's why:

The "executive/businessman" achieves his success through management techniques of the company's employees, ranking personal choice and responsibility rights of those employees a distant SECOND to the goal of growth -- and his goal is always to "grow" the business, aka, the government. No WONDER so many executive businessmen, such as the ones listed above, are Liberal Democrats. DO NOT CONFUSE executive businessmen with small business owners. Romney is a big-business exec who would translate all of that expertise to big-government tactics NOT out of being deceptive or sneaky, but because he is at heart an executive/businessman to whom the idea of "limited" interference in anything is OFF the radar. His guiding principle is GROWTH through efficiency. A true conservative's guiding principle is LIMITED GOVERNMENT through respect for personal freedom and responsibiltiy.

The messenger has no facts, only hysteria, irrationality, and lack of logic. Other than that....
