NASHVILLE Republican Fred Thompson is out of the presidential race, but that isnt stopping some top Republican officials from continuing to support the former U.S. senator in the Feb. 5 GOP primary.
Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, is running as an at-large delegate for Mr. Thompson. Senate Republican Leader Mark Norris, R-Collierville, is running as a Thompson delegate in the 7th Congressional District.
And both are hoping to get to the Republican National Convention this summer as delegates.
During a press availability with reporters this week, Lt. Gov. Ramsey told reporters he has been getting calls from various GOP campaigns seeking his support since Mr. Thompsons flagging campaign officially fizzled.
Obviously, Chip Saltsman, whos with Mike Huckabee, called about 30 minutes after Fred was out, and I asked him what took so long, Lt. Gov. Ramsey joked of Mr. Saltsman, a former Tennessee Republican Party chairman who is Mr. Huckabees campaign manager.
Yesterday, Lt. Gov. Ramsey continued, I got a phone call that came up, unknown number, blocked caller ID. And usually I dont answer that because its usually one of you all (reporters), to be perfectly honest. ... But I answered anyway, and (the voice) said, Hello, this is Mitt Romney.
The lieutenant governor said, Im going to try to stay out of it at least for right now. Ill be behind whoever wins.
Sen. Norris then noted, Im a delegate for Fred Thompson, and Im still on the ballot.
Asked if he were encouraging people to still vote for Mr. Thompson, Sen. Norris grinned and said, you bet. Im a delegate.
Then came a confession from Lt. Gov. Ramsey: And I am (a delegate) too. So I will too. I'm a statewide delegate. I'm sure I still will. Even though he's out, I will, at this time.
Mr. Thompson remains on the ballot and can still win delegates if he wins a certain percentage of the vote.
bump
I still have my Fred Thompson yard sign up and plan to vote for him in the Illinois primary on Feb 5.
Fox News Sunday: Bill Kristol just said that Fred’s campaign co-chair, Liz Cheney - VP’s daughter - just endorsed Romney.
http://californiansformitt.blogspot.com/2008/01/liz-cheney-endorses-romney.html
At THIS point- while I’d hoped Fred wouldn’t endorse anyone- I’m sort of hoping he endorses Romney. The McCain express of endorsements is rolling along- and given the apparent ignorance of the electorate this year- it worries me.
“Why try to claim something thats already been rejected?”
Welcome to the re-education camp. Socialists and elitists are masters at manipulating the word. With the MSM in their pockets, the art of deception confuses pure logic.
We are a society of 15 second sound bites. Slight of hand is extremely easy when people are spoon fed definitions and contridictions, lies and distortions presented as fact.
When challenged, challengers are subject to the same vicious attacks, lies and distortions, utilizing the MSM once again.
We are dealing with very smart, agenda oriented groups here. And their intentions are not in the nations best interest.
Thanks for your support.
I am glad most people see things my way. The irrationality of those Alkhin posts is exactly why many people are turned off at election time.
A vote should never be about fear or intimidation.
Fortunately in America, so far, election results are not riots and mass chaos. Alkhin would lead us to believe that our right to vote exists only if we vote for candidate X.
Otherwise we are incapable of rationality and undeserving of further comment or participation.
And that couldn’t be further from the truth.
I agree. My voting for Romney on Tuesday is not going to be a joy for me to do. I can not stand the thought of McCain or Huckabee being the nominee and want them both stopped in Florida if possible. If I see Fred endorse McCain then I would know that I and many others were royally fooled! It would mean that Fred is really a RINO and that he did his best acting ever playing the part of a real conservative!
some of the Mass. healthcare bill does reduce costs of getting insurance, that part is good. So Romney made the decision to sign the bill even though he didn’t want the forced part of it and the penalties. He vetoed that part. I don’t like the fact that it is forced also, but I understand there are alot of people not getting it anyways. And to call it socialist is not accurate and you should know better. It is a free market deal, just like car insurance which is by law mandatory. People have to buy car insurance ...that doesn’t make it socialist.
My recent survey went through the shredder.
I sent the RNC a letter way back and told them if the borders weren’t a priority, then how could they be strong on national defense?
I sent them a copy of a Peso Bill with Bush’s picture on it as my donation.
Fred is still on the Missouri Ballot and will still get my vote.
Would sure prefer him to anyone but Hunter. And he’s likely much better than hunter in terms of electability.
False analogy. Completely false, in fact.
While I understand the feeling underlying your statement, car insurance is not mandated by the State at all.
You don’t even have to own a car, now do you?
It is only part of a requirement for the privilege of owning a car and having it on the road.
We all own our bodies, right?
This forced healthcare law will steal the money right out of your pocket if you do not pay, correct?
You cannot just “opt out,” correct?
100% mandated by law, correct?
Then that is Socialism by its own definition.
BUMP!
(hi RTG)
first of all, most people must own a car to make a living...it’s part of our God given constitutional right of the pursuit of happiness and our liberty...not a privilege at all. So my analogy is valid. The state does not run the healthcare system and the state does not run the car insurance system, so they are not socialists by definition. And I do believe that there are many people not getting the insurance in Mass. still. I do aggree with you that there should not be a law to mandate health insurance...but Romney does not want to do that and clearly vetoed that part of his bill. And he will have much more support of conservatives as president compared to the highly liberal Mass.
One thing the state should not do is meddle in private business beyond the point of insuring the business is not defrauding people, and delivering the product or service it says. Close market regulation always adds to the cost of doing business, and reduces competition. Free market settings allow people to make choices. Freedom of choice, so wildly heralded by the Democrat excludes personal health care decisions or fiscal business decisions. Government mandated choice is no choice at all. It becomes tyrannical.
When the state is involved in the confiscation of earned business income to fund a mandatory participation health care program, that is socialism, pure and simple.
Business owners depend on their income just the same as a worker depends on a paycheck from that same business.
Why should a business assume all the personal risk, and also be required to carry the public burden just because some government agent thinks they are helping a few people?
We live in a society that gives rewards on good decisions. But when government rewards bad decisions, the consequences become spread throughout and become higher taxes and further erosion of personal freedom and personal responsibility.
Romney conceded to the liberals in Mass. and he will concede to the liberals in DC. Bottom line, incremental socialism enabled by the GOP. Take the word “Republic” out of Republicans and there is nothing of value left.
SAme goes for the remaining ?? candidates.
Without a fiscal conservative in charge of the store, the robbery of the treasury will continue for feel good emotional entitlements. Someone will PAY dearly for everything. And WHO do you think will end up getting the biggest screwing?
If Fred was going to endorse McCain, he would have done it by now. He got in the race after McCain, so if he was McCain backer that would not make sense.
To quote a fellow FReeper "Fred wouldn't raise his hand, I won't hold my nose."
dittos! :)
A local 49 year old BSA leader and father of two ignored his flu symptoms until he was coughing so much he could not catch his breath. He went to the hospital and died within 24 hours. Cause of death: heart attack brought on by lack of oxygen due to pneumonia in both lungs.
I got the pneumonia vaccine a few years ago and recommend it for folks who tend to work through colds and coughs.
hi there PB ... you sure aren’t missing much back here
A wasted vote is one cast for someone you don’t really want to vote for. That’s why I’m voting for Fred in the Georgia primary. PERIOD!
