I am not worried. My time to worry was somewhere around 1958 after Sputnik. It’s somebody else’s turn to worry about total thermonuclear annihilation. I hope the warheads launched from the platforms I worked on fly true.

It would definitely be asymmetric. They blow up some trains or something, they lose a few regions. Fair? No. So?

Depends on the circumstances. I think Bush would. Hitlary, under presure. Obama, only after much negotiations. In a spirit of one being a tragedy and a million a statistic, I think the ashtray thrower wouldn't hesitate to press the button.

The fascinating long-term strategy....is that they really aren’t going back to have dozens of nuke subs out there...nor will they bring a replacement for the Bear or Bison out there...so the only thing you can predict...are lots of ICBMs. I think they are looking long-term...at China eventually being the biggest threat...and that this shaking at the US...is merely for tv coverage and their recovering image.

Trying to egg them on? They are too professional to respond to such goading.
It is not our military personnel whom I doubt (the "they" I assume you are referring to). I fear that OBL and his ilk can sleep soundly knowing that no matter what atrocities they commit our politicians are so hung up on political correctness that they would never issue the order to fire. The Russians, on the other hand, are probably not so constrained.
