Seven good reasons to support Mike Huckabee [be sure to read reason number seven]
The dark and jumbled recesses of my aging feeble brain | January 31, 2008 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 01/31/2008 2:09:25 PM PST by Jim Robinson

My friends, I have to admit that I've been in a bit of a quandary since the Real Conservatives ® Thompson and Hunter dropped out of the race leaving us to to place our bets on one the four headless horsemen. But after having a day or three to sort it all out, I'm beginning to see a ray of hope.

Number one, my worst fear that the pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun social liberal Rudy Giuliani might be nominated, and thereby bring an abrupt and unholy end to the pro-life conservative movement within the GOP has been allayed. His evil culture of death platform has been soundly rejected by the Republican voters. Thank God! If nothing else is gained, that alone is a huge victory for us!

And that leaves us with the unwelcome slippery task of having to determine and select the least evil of the three remaining RINOs. But wait! When choosing between evils, why not choose the good?

McCain is insane and there are many good reasons not to choose him, but I'll list just five: McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, the Keating 5, and the Gang of 14. No thanks. McCain is out!

Romney ran on a pro-abortion platform, is pro gay rights, is prone to BIG government solutions, promises anything to anyone for a vote, and flip-flops on important issues. Can't trust him.

Now Governor Huckabee. Could this be the good vs evil? He's a Baptist minister. A genuine 100% pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, Southron Christian social conservative!

And that would be my reason no. 1 to support Huckabee. He has the trust and backing of the Christian evangelicals and the support of the Bible Belt. You cannot win the presidency without the South, and I believe the pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, pro-America Mike Huckabee is the most likely of the three GOP hopefuls to carry the South. And that's a pretty darn good reason!

My number two reason is that he is NOT McCain (and that's a pretty darn good reason too).

Number three (and this will be a tough one for a lot of my FReeper Friends) is that he is NOT Romney.

Numbers four and five are he's NOT Hillary and NOT Obama. Oohrah!

Number six, he plays a mean bass and he's a traditional favorite at Free Republic's infamous quadrennial Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC. Perhaps we could persuade President Huckabee to drop by our ball and perform his rocking rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama!" Now, wouldn't that be a hoot!

Number seven, if we can keep Huckabee in the race all the way through, thus preventing McCain or Romney from gaining enough delegates to win the nomination, then maybe, just maybe a deadlocked convention might seek out another candidate. One who can re-unite the Reagan Coalition, save the GOP, and put us back on the conservative track. Of course, my personal favorite to be that man would be FRed Thompson.

Woo hoo!!

Let it ring out through grassroots America and on to the convention! Support life! Support the GOP! Support Huckabee! And re-draft FRed Thompson!!

Never give in, never give up, and never lose hope.

Long live the Reagan Revolution!

Sorry, no can do. I dislike Huckabee just a little less than McCain. Anybody that is as pro-illegal as the two of them will not get my vote.

Ooh! Ooh! I can post from a campaign site too!

It has been reported that Mike Huckabee supported benefits for illegals immigrants while he was Governor of Arkansas.

Governor Huckabee never supported benefits for illegal immigrants. In Arkansas, illegal immigrants do not receive welfare benefits or food stamps. Governor Huckabee has always, and will always be supportive of the laws and regulations of the country.

It has also been said that Mike Huckabee was in favor of providing college scholarships for illegal immigrants while he was Governor.

The governor only supported the measure that applied to those who met the academic qualifications and applied for legal citizenship. The measure didn't pass. Governor Huckabee stressed that any student would simply be treated as any other graduate of an Arkansas High School, and not given any special consideration.

Critics say that Governor Huckabee's motives behind opening a Mexican consulate office in Little Rock was to court illegals to come work in Arkansas.

The Mexican consulate provided Arkansas businesses with access to Mexico and opportunities to expand their markets, and would help further ensure that immigrants from Mexico are legal and better able to secure legal documentation. At the same time, the office would open up opportunities for Mexican investors to invest money with Arkansas partners, which would help create more jobs in the state.

Then you can back candidates like that Asteroid that is coming near earth next week...

I mean why the hell not?

I consider Romney a greater evil than a democrat. His nomination will actually cause me to vote for the democrat.

Have fun destroying America.

Grumpy old men part III. I can imagine them running against Obama or Hillary. The Future versus the Past.

I’m in the buckle of the Bible Belt, and I don’t trust Huckabee at all.

“Why not hope for a brokered convention? What does the conservative movement has to lose?”

Because it’s false hope, McCain will get the nomination in a brokered convention.

What does the conservative movement have to lose?

Everything. If McCain wins, the lesson will be that the Republican candidate can win by giving conservatives the finger.
If Romney wins, the lesson is that if you want to run as a Republican, you have to pay homage to the conservatives. So in one scenario, conservatives still have clout in the future, in the other, conservatives will be ignored.

That’s what the conservative movement has to lose.

A very good question. I don't know the answer but the last was Dewey in 1948 over Taft on the 3rd ballot. For the rats it was Stevenson in 1952. Of course both lost in the general; a brokered convention, at least in the last century, was terrible public relations. I expect that's still the case.

These days with so many primaries so far ahead of the convention the writing should be on the wall by April or May and there would be pre-convention wheeling and dealing so the outcome would be known before the convention.

No one I know thinks that McCain or Romney would release their delegates to a third party or even if they're able to (more on that later). Neither is very smart but they're not insane. Well, check that....

For the sake of illustration say the primary were over today with the same percentages. In that case it would probably be Huckberry instructing his delegates to vote for McCain or Romney in exchange for whatever he can get out of them.

Absent a candidate releasing their delegates a delegate is obligated for the first three ballots. I seriously doubt if the party would allow it to go that far.

"[Romney] can’t win over the south and he can’t win core conservatives. if it is his name on the November ballot they will just sit at home."

What if Barbour is his running mate?

Rush says that a vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain.

He's right. I just heard Laura Ingraham playing audio clips of Chucklebee's latest media appearances as well. He's busy making the rounds bashing the cr*p out of Romney, with nary a harsh word for His Dear Friend, McCrazy. As Laura said, anyone who thinks Chucklebee isn't staying in the race just to be chosen as McCrazy's VP hasn't been paying attention.

True, but supporting Huckabee is a vote for McCain. If you don't like McCain, vote for Romney since Huckabee is too far back to win.

ROMNEY IS ONLY TALKING CONSERVATIVE. The only real social conservative in this race is Ron (unelectable) Paul. The only ELECTABLE social conservative is Huckabee. Romney only claims to be conservative after just a few years ago distancing himself from Reagen and supporting Brady ammendmant, abortion, gay marriage, and placing abortion on demand for 50 dollars in tax payer funded health care.

This Fair Scam Tax proposal is another reason why Huckabee should be shut out.

Lets focus on the issue at hand.

We are discussing a tactical situation where Huckabee stays in for no reason other than a spoiler.

BIG IF his delegates are needed to push either mccain or romney over the top then he can cut a deal with them IF either mccain or romney will cut a VP deal.

It also leaves the door open to McCain nad Romney cutting a deal with each other and shutting out kookpaul and Hucabee from the equation and they get zero.

Of course if it is REALLY close, ronpaul could cut a deal for his few delegates at a “less expensive” price than huckabee and shut out Huckabee.

net result:

Fair Tax HR 25 still will never ever ever become law. ever. (to borrow a previous post)

I don’t think it would be enough to be honest, though it could help. So could Thompson.

Haley is committed here though, he won’t leave until his term is up. He wants to see the recovery through.

Now could that change of he is called upon, maybe.

I think Huck NOT winning the nomination is the point. Support him enough to keep all of them from winning the nomination. Then on to a brokered convention.

I’m still too traumatized by our choices to start selling anyone yet, but I am glad that you made this choice.

My head keeps banging against a wall, but there has been a little voice telling me that at least this guy is pro-gun, anti-abortion and a Christian, and he won’t promote gay power (especially in the military).

Like you said, he is not Mitt Romney.

Not so. Tom Tancredo endorsed Romney. That should tell you something.

And Jim Gilchrist endorsed Huckabee. Does that tell me something?

And Romney also has a better record on immigration issues than Huckabee

Yeah, I'm sure Massachusetts had the same amount of illegal immigration problems as a southern state near the border. And those sanctuary cities must have been my imagination.

Sorry Romney is too liberal and I can never forgive McCain for helping Kerry destroy the POW/MIA records and forever leave the POW/MIA issue as unresolveable. However, I don’t think Huckabee has a chance of getting the nomination.
As for Obama and Hillary. Obama has the distinction of being the most liberal person of 2007; no way would I consider him. Hillary? I might sooner vote for the AntiChrist.
I guess that means I will root for Huckabee, the Gomer Pyle candidate.

NumbersUSA stated no such thing. They grilled Huckabee on a set of questions to vet out any amnesty weaseling and Huckabee passed. That's why they gave him an "Excellent" rating.

Not exactly, I do stand corrected on part of my original statement, but the original statement of your's still wasn't correct. (I was doing this from memory)- he was upgraded from "Fair" to "Good" (not Excellent) in his overall rating (upgraded on 01/16/08) and it was because he added one sentence to his website:
In the other direction, I have UPGRADED the amnesty rating for Mike Huckabee from "fair" to "GOOD" after he added a key sentence to his official amnesty policy on his website...

The only candidate currently in the race they have rated Excellent (according to this article) is Romney)- I wouldn't rate him as such.
