President Bush arrived early this morning in Kansas City, Missouri to speak about the economy and to sign the Presidential Proclamation in Honor of American Heart Month (Transcript)
The president had a breakfast meeting with Kansas City business leaders, then toured Hallmark Cards Inc. where he delivered a statement on the economy. (Transcript)
Keeping with the American Heart Month theme, First Lady Laura Bush recorded the weekly radio address today:
For the weekly radio address, President Bush has handed the mic over to me. And today, I'd like to talk about something that's close to my heart -- America's heart health. (Transcript)
Later, the first lady spoke at The Heart Truth’s Red Dress celebrity fashion show at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2008 show in New York City. (Transcript)
Afterwards, Mrs. Bush was joined by daughter Barbara Bush as they watched celebrities such as Heidi Klum, Joss Stone, Mary Lynn Rajskub and others model red dresses on the runway.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski at the State Department in Washington.
President & Mrs. Bush will be spending the weekend at Camp David.

FYI, my husband has come through the surgery ok but we’ve a long road ahead. His heart was in far worse shape than we ever thought and the doctor could only do 3 of the bypasses to the major arteries. The lesser ones in the back of the heart were in too bad a shape.Thank you all for your prayers.

President Bush: I got to see Hallmark cards being made, and the fella kindly made me one that said, "For your daughters." It was sweet, but it just didn't have any warning in there about how to conduct myself for the upcoming wedding. (Laughter.)

BUSH INSISTS U.S. IS STRONGER SINCE HE TOOK OFFICE

In spite of dismal national and international poll ratings, a hostile Congress and a sagging economy, President Bush enters his last year in office expressing total confidence that he’s been doing the right things.
He told me in an Oval Office interview that “absolutely, we are stronger” as a nation than when he took office and that, even in areas where he failed to get what he wanted — as in Social Security and immigration reform — his ideas eventually will prevail.
He said his biggest disappointment as president was his inability to be a “uniter not a divider” and he agreed that politics is “polarized.” On the other hand, he was adamant that he would never compromise on some of the principles — such as cutting taxes and promoting democracy — that have made him so polarizing.
“It’s one thing to compromise on pieces of legislation to get something done,” he said. “It’s another to compromise on principle — which I have refused to do. People say, ‘Oh, you must be a uniter by compromising your beliefs.’
“There are certain things on which I will not compromise. I don’t see how you can be president if you don’t stand strong on your principles. There’s too much incoming.
“There’s too many complicated decisions, too much flattery, too much criticism, too many polls, too many focus groups. And the president has to say: ‘Here is the ground on which I stand.’”

President Bush: I'm here in Kansas City for a couple reasons. One, I do want to spend a little time on the economy. I had breakfast this morning with entrepreneurs, small business owners; I want to find out what's on their mind. I'll tell you that there's a sense of optimism I was pleased to hear. People are confident about the future -- at least, these business owners were -- and they should be. Interest rates are low, inflation is low, productivity is high. But there are certainly some troubling signs. There are serious signs that the economy is weakening and that we got to do something about it.… The government can help. The Federal Housing Administration has got the capacity to help refinance homes, and they need to expand the authority of the FHA to do it. And Congress needs to get that bill passed. I mean, this will be a positive step toward helping people stay in homes. And that's what we want to do.
See, you notice, I'm not saying we're going to bail out the lenders -- we're going to help the individual person be able to keep their home. It's in the interest of the country we do that.

Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto: ... the President will sign the Presidential Proclamation in honor of American Heart History Month here at the hotel ...The President will be accompanied by Joyce Cullen as he signs the proclamation. As a reminder, Joyce Cullen is someone who heard Mrs. Bush, she was here some time ago and saw coverage of her event to a local hospital talking about the importance of women getting treated for heart disease, recognized that she had some of the symptoms that Mrs. Bush was bringing to the attention of women across the country, and went and had herself checked. And she actually suffered a heart attack at the hospital, where she was able to be treated, and had surgery and she's in good health today. So we're happy to have her here with the President today.

Joyce is here to join me as I sign a proclamation declaring February American Heart Month.Part of the reason she is here is because she understands what Laura understands, and what a lot of Americans are coming to understand, is that heart disease is the number one killer of both women and men, and that through awareness of this disease, people are more likely to be able to recognize symptoms and deal with it …
People need to have screenings and checkups; people need to live healthy lives, to exercise and no tobacco. In other words, the decisions we make will affect whether or not our hearts remain strong.
And so I want to thank you for being a strong leader in the campaign for awareness. And so it's my honor, Joyce, to join you in -- as you watch me sign this proclamation declaring February American Heart Month.

Mrs. Bush: Over the last five years, I've seen the Heart Truth campaign spread the word to women about how they can protect their heart health. Symptoms of a heart attack can be different in women than in men. Symptoms in women can include persistent fatigue, difficulty breathing, and a pain in the jaw or neck. If women have these symptoms, they should go immediately to the hospital.Nothing draws attention like a little red dress, so this is the Heart Truth's symbol. Across the country, people are rallying around that dress. Women are taking heart disease more seriously. So are their doctors. And every year from 2000 to 2005, heart disease deaths among women decreased.
This is good progress, but we still want more people to know the Heart Truth. Too many women, especially African-American women, die of heart disease. More than 80 percent of middle-aged women have at least one risk factor and many of them don't know it.
Mrs. Bush: Good morning, everybody. Good morning. Welcome to Fashion Week 2008. February is American Heart Month, and today we're here to see the Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection ...Five years ago under these very tents, the Red Dress was introduced as the Heart Truth's symbol, and nothing draws attention like a little red dress. This red dress is drawing women's attention to heart disease. The Red Dress has inspired women to fit into smaller red dresses. It's encouraged women to prevent heart disease by healthy eating, by getting regular exercise, by not smoking, by seeing their doctors for regular blood pressure and cholesterol screenings.
The fashion community has supported the Red Dress project ever since the Heart Truth campaign was launched. And today, by designing and wearing these fabulous red dresses, you're showing that being healthy never goes out of style.
