Men No Longer Needed?: Scientists Use Female Adult Stem Cells to Create "Female Sperm"
LifeSiteNews ^ | 2/1/08 | John Jalsevac

Posted on 02/02/2008 10:02:42 AM PST by wagglebee

U.K., February 1, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - "'Female sperm', 'male eggs' and 'same-sex reproduction' - whether these terms fill you with hope or disgust, a reproductive revolution is already in progress," begins a recent New Scientist report on some of the most bizarre and disturbing scientific research being conducted by stem cell scientists.

"In a handful of labs across the world, biologists are trying to make genetically male cells develop into eggs, and female cells into sperm. If successful, their efforts might one day allow lesbian and gay couples to have children that are genetically their own," the report continues.

Scientists at Newcastle upon Tyne University in the U.K. claim to have already used adult stem cells to create primitive sperm, reports New Scientist. Karim Nayernia, a stem-cell biologist at Newcastle, made adult stem cells derived from male bone marrow develop into spermatogonia, and then coaxed the spermatgonia to undergo meisois, thereby becoming mature sperm with sufficient genetic information to impregnate a human egg.

According to the New Scientist report, Nayernia claims to have developed the spermatogonia from female bone marrow as well, but has not yet been able to make the female spermatogonia undergo meiosis.

Theoretically, were Nayernia to be successful in his attempt to create "female sperm", a lesbian couple could give birth to a child that is a composite of both of the partner's genetic material, with no man having contributed to the process of procreation.

Scientists are also working on developing a human egg from male stem cells. In such a scenario it would be possible that a human egg would be made using skin cells of one of the male partners in a homosexual relationship, which would then be impregnated with the sperm of the other partner. The fertilized embryo would then be implanted in the womb of a surrogate mother.

In Brazil, stem-cell scientist Irina Kerkis claims to have already created sperm and eggs from male mouse embryonic stem cells. "We are starting experiments with human embryonic stem cells," Kerkis told New Scientist.

At the same time, in the U.S., patent analyst Greg Aharonian is attempting to obtain a patent for technologies that would allow scientists to create sperm or eggs, allowing same-sex couples thereby to have their own children.

In his patent application, Aharonian states, "The present invention includes methods for developing sperm containing a female's chromosomes, or developing eggs containing a male's chromosomes, and the sperm or eggs so produced."

In the "background to the invention" section of the application, Aharonian claims that this technology could overcome the "only" objection to allowing same-sex couples to "marry" - that is, their present inability to procreate.

"The main, if not only, objective reason for opposing same-sex marriage is that same sex procreation is impossible - two men cannot conceive a child that has genetic material only from both men, and similarly for two women," writes Aharonian.

"But is same sex procreation impossible, so that same-sex couples are forever denied equal protection under marriage laws? Or like brain surgery, face transplants and other 'unnatural' medical technologies, are there clinical techniques to achieve same-sex procreation?"

Aharonian told the New Scientist, "I'm a troublemaker."

As with most stem-cell technologies, however, there are safety concerns about the process. Reportedly Nayernia pioneered his "female sperm" techniques first on mice, impregnating female mouse eggs with sperm derived from female stem cells. The mice that were subsequently born, however, suffered severe health problems.

One other problem with creating "female sperm" is that such sperm would always lack the Y chromosome necessary to conceive a male child. Hence the process could only ever produce a female child.

There are also still a host of technological problems to be solved, which has lead some scientists to conclude that useable "female sperm" and "male eggs" are still a long ways off. "I think it will take far more than 10 years," said Robin Lovell-Bade of the London-based National Institute for Medical Research.

This is not considered a problem in the eyes of most people who are pushing this "technology"...

Yeah, no problem. Kill off those useless men. Then, who will women blame for their shortfalls and all of the downsides of life that come along. Who will they blame when they don’t get that promotion or their lesbian boss makes sexually harasses them? Who will do the heavy lifting work? They sure as hell won’t blame themselves, it’s against their nature to be wrong about anything.

And so we will create a new breed of humans who will have to face the sad fact that unlike the majority of humanity - they do not have both a mother and a father.

I think that will be very sad for them.

This technique will not produce healthy offspring. The epigenetic pattern of DNA methylation that each parent passes down to their offspring is different. The father’s emphasizes the expression of genes that will call upon the maternal resources of the mother, and the mother’s say’s ‘don’t listen too much to your father dear’. Moreover many genes have a ‘dosage effect’, in that only one copy needs to be expressed during life and/or development. This is accomplished often by the Male or Female turning off this gene by methylation of the DNA when they pass it down to their offspring.

So a child conceived of two women’s DNA would be MESSED UP! Until they figure out the ‘epigenetic’ genome- and can reconstitute one of the female’s DNA that she passes on to her offspring to mimic the epigenetic pattern of the male’s DNA contribution.

Man yet again attempts to become {as GOD}. First was the fruit of knowledge then came Babel. Twice it has been stopped. There was also concern about Adam and Eve eating from the tree of life {eternal} after their sin. Mankind is treading in very deep water. We possess knowledge and lack the wisdom it requires to use it wisely. Mankind is on a quest to create eternal life via science in our imperfect bodies. Only disaster can be the ultimate result. Yet people ignore the fact that such an eternal life with perfect bodies has done been given to us. What a shame.

In a far wilder futuristic scenario, these reproductive technologies will be needed for very long space voyages. We may or may not completely eliminate the risk of mutation from cosmic rays and other background radiation “out there”.

One of the ways to ensure successful conception may be to have these kinds of capabilities.

Just to add to the conjecture: Y chromosome could prove particularly lethal in outer space. Females may survive better than males.

Thanks. Another reality to consider. A persons soul is given to mankind from GOD. Man has domain over earth because of having a soul and reasoning, conscience, etc. What would we call a being created in mans image with no soul or conscience? The word BEAST comes to mind. A gross imperfect creation which like Babel and other man made objects mankind would worship. Nobody is really sure how long Frankenstein research has being going on for certain. A sobering thought to consider. We need to be careful of what we call a good idea.

IIRC; “Dolly’s” clones were genetically “old.”

What problems will the offspring suffer?

I love listening to “liberated women” talk about how they “don’t need men”.

These broads are living in a house built by men, eating food that was trucked to them by men, driving a car, which was invented by a man, and enjoying all the conveniences brought to us by our horribly patriarchal soceity.

These broads would do fine without men until the first time it came time to change the oil in their cars.

Then they’d be sunk.

I used to think “If homosexuals can’t technically reproduce with each other, how come there are so many?”

I see they have recognized this “problem” and are trying to find ways around this.

Does this mean I am going to have to learn how to “color coordinate,” or whatever my wife calls it; in order to stay with the times?

Another thread on this important topic. PLEASE ping your lists.

This is an offshoot of the technology which Pope Benedict was praising last week.

While being able to turn skin cells into stem cells eliminates the need to kill babies to harvest embryonic stem cells, there this side effect.

If skin cells can be changed into stem cells, the economic price of the procedure drops dramatically.

Soon two men or two women will be able to have their own genetic children.

Previously, to do this, one would need to kill a baby, harvest some embryonic stem cells, remove the nuclei of each one, insert his/her own DNA, and then cultivate the stem cells to turn into eggs or sperms.

Very few homosexuals would have the money needed for all those steps.

But if a scientist can take a lesbian's or homosexual man's own skin cells and turn then into eggs and sperm, the procedure becomes -- relatively speaking -- cheap and doable.
