Exclusive poll: Romney closing in on McCain Monday, February 04, 2008

(KABC) -- With the California primary just 24 hours away, an exclusive Eyewitness News poll conducted by Survey U.S.A. has delivered some surprising new developments in the race for president.

On the Republican side, former Governor Mitt Romney is closing in on Arizona Senator John McCain. According to the exclusive poll by Survey U.S.A. the contest should best be characterized as too-close-to-call.

McCain remains in the lead with 39 percent of the vote, while Romney is just three points behind at 36. Meanwhile, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul are in the single digits.

Compared to a Survey U.S.A. poll 1 week ago, conducted before Rudolph Giuliani withdrew from the contest, McCain is up 2, Romney is up 11. McCain had led by 12, now by 3, within the survey's 4.4 percent margin of sampling error.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton appears to be fending-off a late charge from Barack Obama. The exclusive poll by Survey U.S.A. has Clinton beating Barack Obama 53 percent to 41 percent. With John Edwards out of the race, Clinton has gained four points since last week's poll and Obama is up another three points.

Other pollsters show the contest closer.

I hope this is right, but they said the same thing for Florida. They probably don’t want McCain voters to get too complacent.

Howard Fineman on Hardball right now said that McCain was preparing for a loss in California.

So McCain’s media is making newer news. Wonder what all that global warming tomorrow will do to these poll numbers? Does ‘bad’ weather favor McCain?

As soon as Mitt wins, look for all the purists here to throw another week of temper tantrums.

Remember this:

President Reagan once said the following when asked about why he found compromise with the Congress though a staunch man of Conservative principle:

“When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn’t like it.
“Compromise” was a dirty word to them and they wouldn’t face the fact that we couldn’t get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don’t get it all, some said, don’t take anything. I’d learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: ‘I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average.’ If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that’s what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.“

Yep. Another Poll showing good ole 30% +- McCain as a winner. And the MSM makes it clear that he is some kind of 'Overwhelming Favorite'? Give me a break!

Other than Fla has this anachronism ever broken 40%? I suspect if his co-conspirator Huckabee exited Romney would soundly trounce McCain. The fix is in IMO.
