Exclusive poll: Romney closing in on McCain Monday, February 04, 2008

(KABC) -- With the California primary just 24 hours away, an exclusive Eyewitness News poll conducted by Survey U.S.A. has delivered some surprising new developments in the race for president.

On the Republican side, former Governor Mitt Romney is closing in on Arizona Senator John McCain. According to the exclusive poll by Survey U.S.A. the contest should best be characterized as too-close-to-call.

McCain remains in the lead with 39 percent of the vote, while Romney is just three points behind at 36. Meanwhile, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul are in the single digits.

Compared to a Survey U.S.A. poll 1 week ago, conducted before Rudolph Giuliani withdrew from the contest, McCain is up 2, Romney is up 11. McCain had led by 12, now by 3, within the survey's 4.4 percent margin of sampling error.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton appears to be fending-off a late charge from Barack Obama. The exclusive poll by Survey U.S.A. has Clinton beating Barack Obama 53 percent to 41 percent. With John Edwards out of the race, Clinton has gained four points since last week's poll and Obama is up another three points.

Other pollsters show the contest closer.

Sorry, that wasn’t me watching Chris. I was responding to another post. I don’t watch those rabid dogs.

HUH?? That response makes absolutely no sense. I simply stated that making Eyewitness News Poll—hardly the epitome of political polling nationwide or even in CA—as if it was “THE POLL” of record is a big mistake. I’ll take Zogby and Rasmussen over EWN Poll ANY day!

My apologies, Hattie—

I’m like a guard dog today, ready to jump on just about anything that moves (no sexual innuendo intended)!

Understand entirely. Sometimes I get going and don't get my italics in.

I hear ya. Tomorrow’s probably the day our nation’s future is decided. I feel good, though. I think Romney’s surge is underreported, as it’s hitting its zenith as we speak.

Also, polling results are strongly weighted toward land-line owners, who are way, way more likely to be McCain’s demographic.

Half of California's primary votes are expected to be absentees mailed in before Romney's surge, and many before the Florida results were in.

So anything can happen.

Whoop de doo. Two liberals fighting over the carcass of a dead irrelevant party.

McAmnesty pretty much did that himself. The GOP's funding pretty much dried up over that.

There was in essence no Mass GOP before Romney came along to win the Governorship.

Blaming Romney for the destruction of the GOP here in Massachusetts is disingenuous.

I don’t support Mitt Romney. Please Californians, do the right thing and vote for John McCain!

Or at very least, don’t vote for the flip-flopping Mitt Romney.

One last comment. While there’s some movement afoot in California for Mitt Romney, there’s virtually no evidence of other states trending his way. NY, NJ, CT and many, many other states seem like sure losses for him tomorrow. I suspect that McCain will win California, too.

I suspect if his co-conspirator Huckabee exited Romney would soundly trounce McCain.

You can suspect, but in the polls that detailed it, Huckabees voters, at least the majority of them, expressed McCain as their second choice.

Time to get behind the least-bad of the RINOs left running.

Thank you for your blessing to vote for Huckabee tomorrow.

Really. An honest question - What is the breakout of Huck Voters second choice, if available?

“Please Californians, do the right thing and vote for John McCain!”

How in the world could voting for that open-borders creep EVER be the “right thing?”

In the Florida exit polls, Huckabee voters went for McCain as their second choice over Romney about 44 to 33%. That was one of the smaller cases.

Put another way by RedState.com:

Put otherwise, if Huckabee were to drop out before Tuesday, McCain could likely break 50% in most of the states. Romney supporters should be glad he is still in the race.
