Bill would prohibit gun confiscation in Wyoming

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The memory of Louisiana police confiscating guns from waterlogged citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina a few years ago has some Wyoming legislators anxious to make sure nothing similar ever happens here.

A proposed Wyoming bill would change the state's Homeland Security laws. It would spell out that the governor and other officials don't have authority to confiscate guns from law-abiding citizens in the event of natural disasters or terrorist attacks.

The National Rifle Association has pushed similar legislation around the country following Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans and the surrounding area in August 2005.

Lyman Republican Representative Allen Jaggi is the main sponsor of the Wyoming legislation. He says he was inspired to write the bill after talking with a Louisiana lawmaker at a conference who told him about the gun confiscation there.

Jaggi said his legislation isn't intended to voice a lack of confidence in any particular Wyoming officials.

The main reason gun confiscation in Wyoming is a very, very bad idea:

I'm happy for the bill but the government will always declare it can be overridden on a national security basis or similar.

When they try to confiscate guns, the government becomes every bit the enemy of the people as the worst terrorist.

They should show the film of the police invading an elderly woman’s home because she refused to evacuate, throwing her to the ground and taking her weapon. It is a pretty powerful film piece. I wonder what ever happened to the California Highway Patrolman that threw her to the ground.

The Louisiana government confiscated guns from the people of Louisiana to punish those insufficiently affluent to hire private armed security forces, exempt from the confiscation. They did so only because the ruins of the City of New Orleans then lay solely within international waters and therefore somehow temporarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States of America, famed for its Second Amendment guarantee against infringement of the right of the People to keep and bear arms. Louisiana authorities alternatively might reason that those among the people insufficiently wealthy to hire private security forces did not qualify as full legal free persons, a bizarre legal status akin to that of Dred Scott and Jane Roe’s baby.

That argument doesn't hold "water". If you check my video in post 11 above, you will see dry streets where the confiscations, stand offs and arrests are being conducted.
