Conservative anger resists against McCain ?!

The Winter of Conservative Discontent

By Thomas Lifson

The prospect of John McCain as Republican nominee is inspiring sometimes angry resistance from millions of conservative stalwarts.

Ann Coulter's famous support for Hillary Clinton threatens to spark a wave of conservative "suicide voters" if the Arizona Senator gets the nomination.

Other Republicans, variously called insiders, party pros, elitists and worse, blithely assure us the alienated base will come around in the end and vote for McCain and the GOP ticket, particularly if Hillary Clinton is the alternative.

Assuming McCain gets the nomination, I am not so sure. It could go either way.

Anger at McCain

Anger has been a consistent theme for 7 years on the left, beginning with outrage over Bush's electoral victory. Anger now has become a familiar conservative motif, as well. McCain has provoked a profound animus from conservatives ranging from Rush Limbaugh and Thomas Sowell on down to the posters at numerous conservative blogs, emailers to this site, and callers to talk radio.

McCain's Legislative sins prominently include McCain-Feingold, McCain-Lieberman, and McCain-Kennedy. All three feel to principled conservatives like monstrous betrayals -- liberalism that can only make things worse.

Then there is the obvious relish with which McCain sometimes sticks it to the disaffected voters to his right, as with his comment on a conference call to bloggers likening ANWR and the Grand Canyon as places we shouldn't drill for oil. The conservative base of the GOP has been dissed by the Senator on multiple occasions like this, in ways big and small.

You can put a donkey in an elephant suit, but that doesn’t mean you vote for it. Damn straigt. No real American would vote for John McCain.

Yes, and I would hold my nose and vote for Huckabee. (Anyone who molly-coddles the CFR has to be dealt with carefully, but he beats John McCain by about 10 laps.)

Resistance? There's a large faction here who wouldn't even vote for him to be the town dog catcher...ever.

NO RINOs!

Misinformation, lies, distortion of facts, and much more brought us to this delima. McNut will not be President because he is liberal and slightly unstable. He acts like a emotional sick person with his temper tantrums. He now flips and says he is a conservative. Look at his past 7 years. He will never change. Where to go from here? We have to get control of the Senate.

I am with you on your first two sentences. I would not go as far to say a real American wouldn’t vote for McCain. I would say they are deluded and are living the lie, but I wouldn’t say they aren’t real Americans. There are some that may genuinely believe it’s the best thing for the country. I think they are wrong, but they can be real Americans but just be dead wrong about this.

But I sure am with you about the donkey in the elephant suit and not voting for it. RINOs need to go extinct.

Just say no to McAmnesty. Why waste your time and money on this loser when you can focus your effort on your congress critter. Forget the RNC give money direct to the congressional person of your choice — AMNESTY Mel will just spend your money on whomever he likes. A much better return on investment, regardless which Democrat wins the White House, control of congress will matter.

I’m just so sick of having to vote for the lesser of two evils instead of being excited about a great candidate.

Here’s why I think the rhetoric has to be pushed up not just a notch—but about 10 rungs on the ladder:

We are losing our country. We are losing it to timid, yuppie economic conservatives who don’t have the testicals or the heart or the brains to understand that John McCain is an idiot. (The McCains bragged about doing badly at the service academies and then doing well in battle; that may be true for John’s dad—but John manages to both flunk and get himself captured.) You may honor a shell shocked veteran who comes back from battle with spittle on his lip and a mind full of hare-brained nonsense, but when he lets you know he has a problem with the first amdendment, you start calling him the traitor that he is.

I don’t want to sit down to dinner with anyone stupid enough to vote for John McCain. The sooner we either scold or teach these people a lesson, the better for the cause.

Alan Keyes is the candidate who best reflects my way of thinking about the issues. That was the case before the field narrowed and is still true today. I hope folks will check out his website — http://www.alankeyes.com — and will consider voting for him. Further, I urge all to talk about Alan Keyes’ candidacy with as many folks as they can every day until the convention. A lot can happen between now and then. If you think this election is important, and if Dr Keyes is right on as many of the issues you are especially interested in as he is for those I see as core issues, then you ought to be taking serious measures to help inform your fellow voters.

Well, I do understand what you are saying. There are a lot of people who only get their info about McCain from the MSM, and we know what they are doing here regarding him.

I should clarify that we know what the MSM is doing in their coverage of McCain. I re-read my last sentence and saw some ambiguity with too many pronouns in there.

At this point, I think the whole question of whether to support McCain or not is moot. The RATs and the MSM are going to tear him a new one, whether we support him or not. People will get the government they deserve.

I don’t understand why the evangelicals didn’t get behind Keyes instead of that crazy Huckabee. Keyes is a true conservative that represents their beliefs.

It will make me deathly ill, but if voting for Obama is the only way to keep McCain out of the White House, that’s what I will do. At least with Obama in the White House conservatism has a chance to come back. McCain will kill conservatism and the Republican Party.
