That’s what so weird about the whole thing. I can remember as a child when Senator Dirkson was trying to pass civil rights laws, and it was the Southern Democrats filibustering and everything else to stop it. In those days, the ‘solid South’ Democrat politicians were pulling out the stops to block equal rights. It was the congressional Republicans that held firm all the way. And under LBJ’s rule, all the welfare laws were passed that refused benefits to a black mother if the father lived in the home.

Daniel Patrick Moynhan, a rare common-sense Democrat, warned that the welfare act as written would destroy countless black families with the discounting of black husbands/fathers. He was pilloried for his 1965 prophetic prediction by his fellow liberal Democrats, but time has shown him to be absolutely right.
