McCOOK Firefighters were waiting until oil burns off inside a pipeline that exploded here today before trying to get closer to the blaze.
Black smoke rushed across a cloudy sky in northern Hidalgo County today, driven by winds gusting to 40 mph. Orange flames were visible in the air just over a rise.
One person on property adjacent to the explosion site was injured and is being treated, said Linn San Manuel Fire Department Chief Domingo Hinojosa Jr. The extent of the injuries was not immediately known.
“We’re just waiting for the fire to burn down,” Hinojosa said. Firefighters shut off the flow of crude distillate oil about 10 miles down the pipeline and were waiting for the rest of the crude to burn off.
Hinojosa said he did not know who owned the pipeline or what caused the explosions at about 9:30 a.m.
Phyllis Pilarcyzk owner of the McCook Trading Post, said she knew little “except it was a big boom.” She described the rural farming community in northwest Hidalgo County as “30 miles from anything.”
Glad I bought gas this morning. So, when will we see $4.00 gallon gas; it always goes up when anything like this happens.
I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but “multiple exposions” makes me think immediately of multiple charges, which would be the technique used to cut the pipeline.
Better immediately raise the price at the pump to $4 a gallon. Just in case and all.
DISTILLATE OIL A general classification for one of the petroleum fractions produced in conventional distillation operations. It is used primarily for space heating, on-and-off-highway diesel engine fuel (including railroad engine fuel and fuel for agricultural machinery), and electric power generation. Included are products known as No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 fuel oils; No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 diesel fuels.
Distillate fuel oil is reported in the following sulfur categories: 0.05% sulfur and under, for use in on-highway diesel engines which could be described as meeting EPA regulations; and greater than 0.05% sulfur, for use in all other distillate applications.
The pipeline could have corroded and leaked. Oil puddles in several areas. Fire starts (Illegals campfire?) Heat causes off gassing Things go boom more than once. Or In the dark of night, a secert Iran intel/SBK squad enetered the area thru the open border with Mexico, planted large amounts of Semtex explosives and timers, then unassed the AO via Mexico to watch the fireworks from afar while as small stay-behind squad was timing the response, monitoring communications and level of response to plan further, much larger attacks on the eve of the uopcoming election thus ensuring John McCain gets elected..... Hey Patton - beat that! 74 words in the sentance....and fiction to boot.
We're told one person suffered minor exposure to the flames. Crews on scene are checking on the unidentified individual.
There was also significant damage to the pavement near the explosion.
Dozens of agencies are on the scene trying to figure out what went wrong. We're told the magnitude of the explosion could make it difficult to find its cause. HESCO Gas has also sent supervisors and crews to the area.

Sounds like an accident during repair work rather than anything else.
Oh, hell. $5.00 gallon by Monday!!! :)
At 5:26 a.m., mountain daylight time, on Saturday, August 19, 2000, a 30-inch diameter natural gas transmission pipeline operated by El Paso Natural Gas Company ruptured adjacent to the Pecos River near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The released gas ignited and burned for 55 minutes. Twelve persons who were camping under a concrete-decked steel bridge that supported the pipeline across the river were killed and their three vehicles destroyed. Two nearby steel suspension bridges for gas pipelines crossing the river were extensively damaged. According to El Paso Natural Gas Company, property and other damages or losses totaled $998,296.The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the August 19, 2000, natural gas pipeline rupture and subsequent fire near Carlsbad, New Mexico, was a significant reduction in pipe wall thickness due to severe internal corrosion. The severe corrosion had occurred because El Paso Natural Gas Companys corrosion control program failed to prevent, detect, or control internal corrosion within the companys pipeline. Contributing to the accident were ineffective Federal pre-accident inspections of El Paso Natural Gas Company that did not identify deficiencies in the companys internal corrosion control program.

Prairie, this should be in breaking news, not activism.
Dang, this is the third time in 24 hours...people are going to think I’m campaigning to be a mod.

Northwest county pipeline rupture causes fire, explosion

McCOOK - A gas line rupture west of the city sent flames shooting across the highway and plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky today, damaging a major access road for oil and gas companies.
A stretch of Farm-to-Market Road 490 between FM 611 and FM 755 remains closed as officials let the gas burn out of the pipeline and assess the damage to the road, which is expected to remain closed at least through the day, Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider said.
One person, working at an adjacent station suffered minor injuries in the explosion. He initially left the scene, but officials were bringing him back to the scene for medical evaluation early Friday afternoon.
