Jack Kemp's Message to Conservatives: Lay Off McCain (Transcript of interview on H&C)
Fox News ^ | Feb. 18, 2007 | Hannity, Colmes, Kemp

Posted on 02/18/2008 12:32:06 PM PST by FocusNexus

This is a rush transcript from "Hannity & Colmes," February 15, 2008.

ALAN COLMES, CO-HOST: ...Former vice presidential nominee and McCain supporter, Jack Kemp, penned an open letter to these critics. And he wrote. quote, "you gave them your best shots and he took it like a man. Now as he head toward the nomination, I urge you to continue to be critical but to do so in measured ways that will not damage his ability to win in November." Joining us now to explain further, Jack Kemp, Secretary Kemp, welcome back to "Hannity & Colmes."

COLMES: ... Are the conservatives who are attacking John McCain or differing with him, depending upon which person you're listing to, what the tone is, hurting the Republican party?

KEMP: No. I, you know, eventually, you want them to be on board a McCain campaign, I think the Bible says very clearly who "he who wrestles with us strengthens us." And I think John has been strengthened by going through this. I hope that as you pointed out, in quoting my letter, that the criticisms are measured here as he comes closer to the nomination so that when he does run against Barack or Hillary, he's not weakened to the point where we end up electing somebody who would wave a white flag to Al Qaeda or end up putting Supreme Court justices on the Supreme Court who are to the left of where the American people are.

Mad McCain considered leaving the Republican Party when he lost to Bush. He isn’t a conservative and doesn’t give a diddly for the Republican Party and I’m not voting for him. I refuse to vote for a fake. If every conservative and Republican did not vote for him, this would not happen again. If Republicans/conservatives vote for him, this bastardization of the Party will continue forever.

One either votes for their core values to preserve them or destroys their values by voting for those who are bereft of those values.

Question...I read the entire article and could not find where Kemp told conservatives "to lay off McCain". Just for the sake of accuracy in titling articles on FR, can you tell me where in the article Jack said this? Thanks.

Gee whizz, I didn’t know RINOS stuck together in herds.

Ya learn somethin’ new every day. First we learn that the country will disappear instantly if we don’t elect Juan McCain, then all the troops will dissolve and starve. And it is pretty much a guarantee McCain will win if only us Conservatives will vote for the sake of the country, completely against what we believe.

I guess we all know what will most likely happen, the Democrats will win anyway. Then what do we do? Go out and shoot ourselves because we are just plain doomed?

Not me, I’m going to let the Democrats get the blame for what is about to happen to the country. I can take care of my own. Then it will be prime for another Reagan-like President to come in and make America proud again, and Conservative again. But before that happens, we have to clean house first of all the Liberal/moderate slime that is stinking up the Living Room.

“This guy is a walking timebomb, and the sooner that problem is addressed the better!”

Don’t worry, Hillary or Obama will address that at nauseum in the general election.

Why do you want to help them destroy McCain?

He got the Republican nomination fair and square, due to the naivite of the conservatives, so now it’s either him or Hillarobama. I don’t know why is it so difficult to comprehend that.

McCain is the one going around saying Hillary is a great candidate and that he is the epitome of a “true conservative”.

With all due respect, Mr. Kemp, Mr. McCain is the one picking the fights.

I expect Pelosi, Obama, and Reid to do what they promise without qualifying their promises with "I will try...".

Now only if McCain would do the same.

1981 isn't that long ago.

Besides, we now know most of yoru longevity (once you get up to 50 years of age or thereabouts) is due mostly to your genes ~ not your diet, not your medications, not wonder drugs ~ just plain old genes.

McCain's background is pretty obvious ~ the genes aren't there.

You know you people and your OMG Barak Obama is going to be president if you don’t vote for McCain are getting on my nerves.

We survived 8 years of Bill Clinton and got the first republican congress in 50 years thanks to him.

We survived 4 years of Jimmy Carter and got Ronald Reagan.

I think we can survive 4 years of Obama. Question is can the republican party survive a John McCain candidacy?

You know the answer...but stick to your principles....they are more important than the unborn.

You should hear yourself.

I fully intend to stick to my principles. You enjoy that sh*t sandwich your betters in the party have prepared for you.

Also remember that conservatives unhappy with Bush I for “not being conservative enough” who voted for Ross Perot gave us 8 years of Bill Clinton and launched Hillary’s political career.

Bush 41, no one else, lost the election when he abandoned the conservative base and reached across the aisle and worked with Democrats to raise taxes and sign gun control.

The good news is that even Republicans are capable of learning. Since Bush 41's blunder and handing over the presidency to an Arkansas grifter, it's almost unheard of for a Republican candidate to espouse raising taxes or signing gun control.

In November of this year the Republican leadership will most likely learn some new lessons.

___________

So I suppose McCain’s 96% pro life rating from NARAL is somehow not in line with your core values...but allowing BHO (a 100% pro-abortion rating) to take the white house would somehow help the unborn...

Interesting logic there. If it weren’t a matter of life or death, I’d laugh.

Problem is the Dems we are dealing with are mighty close to a large number of old Bolsheviks ~ and KGB agents ~ and their intention is to take over the country, loot it for their friends, and kill off the troublemakers.

Don't for a minute think that this Obama guy has a nice bone in his body.

Those debates completely changed my opinion of Kemp. He was totally out argued and out classed by Gore. GORE OF ALL PEOPLE. How pathetic is that?

Kemp was coached by James Stockdale. :-)

Then repeat after me...”Hillary is our next President, Hillery is our next President, Hillery is our next President........I guess that is what you all want and don’t care what happens. This is not England and there is no viable third party electable system. You drop McC and you get Hillary or the other one. Case closed.
