'PINK' organization lacks impact (Code Pink)
The Western Courier ^ | February 18, 2008 issue | Andrew Browning

Berkeley, Calif., has always been considered a Mecca for hippies. Their staunch anti-war views and liberalism have been allowed to flourish there, and when the Marines opened up a recruiting station in the heart of Berkeley, the women who belonged to CODEPINK began choking on their vanilla lattes and vegan muffins.

According to its Web site, CODEPINK "is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars and redirect our resources into health care, education and other life-affirming activities." While I may believe in some of their viewpoints, the insanity they have been causing in Berkeley is ridiculous and somewhat laughable.

People have gotten so bent out of shape about the Marines' recruiting station that CODEPINK now has "exclusive use of a parking spot for four hours one afternoon each week, for the next six months." If that wasn't enough, the group has also sought legal action to try and have the Marines kicked out of the city.

One activist said, "If you're going to join the Marines, you're going to join the Marines … but you don't have to join the Marines from our town." If a young woman or man is interested in joining the Marines, they should not be hindered from doing so.

You might be wondering how the Marine Corps is dealing with this. For them, nothing has changed. In a time of war, you are always going to run into people who disagree, people who refuse to objectively view the other side. It is "business as usual" as a Marine Major said, and they definitely seem to be acting more appropriately than CODEPINK on this one. When CODEPINK begins to protest, the Marines lock the door, close the blinds and wait for the kumbaya circles to dissipate.

CODEPINK activists act like they just now found out some recruiters lie and manipulate the truth to get civilians to enlist in the military. Of course not all recruiters are purveyors of misinformation, but have been stereotyped that way.

If CODEPINK is serious about having an impact on political decisions, it should endorse the presidential candidate who fits its viewpoints, along with holding more structured rallies and vigils.

CODEPINK is quickly being recognized as an organization with extreme viewpoints, and if it continues down the path it is on, the group is going to lose a lot of support.

If members really wanted to make sure no one joins the Marines, especially their children, they should educate them about the military and the potential outcomes if they were to enlist. All CODEPINK does by being overly dramatic and blowing things out of proportion is give free advertising to the Marines. To anyone who can think rationally, this would seem pretty counter-productive considering the things the group believes in and is trying to achieve.

As far as I am concerned, the Marines have as much of a right to be there as CODEPINK does, but if the Marines tried to remove some antiwar protestors, they would be called fascists. Anytime a person, a group or an organization tries to trample on the rights of someone else, I don't see how anything is going to be accomplished.

The petition

We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Council’s treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws it’s action.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”

The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.

The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

I think “Code PMS!” would get them far more attention and taken a bit more seriously.

It’s a collection of leftist fools who think dressing up like clowns is making an important political statement.

redirect our resources into health care, education and other life-affirming activities.

Some people just fail to understand that without security, you can have none of these other things. Although I know I'm preaching to the choir on that subject here on FR.

I think they are great for us. They look so bad, and are so stupid, that anyone with half a brain would be repulsed.

They are so bad that they could almost be a Rove invention.

YEP, let’s spend more money on various social programs. We don’t spend enough.

We have spent over $5 trillion on various social programs since the war on poverty programs launched in 1965. Have we gotten a good return on that investment?

Do the Code Pink girls really think that we just don’t spend enough money on education and health care and other politically correct causes? Would all of our social problems just disappear if we only spent more money on them?

...Mecca for hippies. Their staunch anti-war views and liberalism...

As one who was a Berkeley radical in the 60's it's amusing to see the conservative pundits get it wrong when it comes to hippies. To locals, hippies are amotivational do-nothings. To imagine them caught up in or leading a movement of any kind is patently absurd. But, because of their appearance, they make an easy mark for those who are intellectually lazy. The same mistake was made by the MSM writers regarding the influence of the communists during the anti war protest of the 60's. Commie "brown shirts," (as we called them were openly scorned and ridiculed by Berkeley radicals.
