Protests Continue at Recruiting Center In Berkeley — And in Mountain View
The Berkeley Daily Planet ^ | February 19, 2008 | Judith Scherr

Since the Marine Recruiting Center in downtown Berkeley was locked Friday morning when the World Can’t Wait protesters arrived around 7:30 a.m. aiming to shut it down and risk arrest, the group and its allies from Code Pink and ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and Racism) went to Plan B.

They held a press conference, demonstrated and called out to passing motorists with chants such as, “murder, rape, torture war, that’s what they’re recruiting for.”

They chanted beyond the time that their 2 p.m. sound permit ran out, as noted in a press release sent out by the Berkeley police.

A dozen or so police watched most the day without intervening. Stephanie Tang of World Can’t Wait said she was in touch with police and it appeared that the protests could continue.

Around 4 p.m., Tang said police told her, “The Marines want your signs off their windows.”

Tang told the Planet that the signs had been there all day, outside the locked office and that she could not make the others take them down.

That’s when a large number of officers moved in, shoving protesters out of the way and removed the signs from the window, according to Tang. The protesters were held briefly in the center of Shattuck Avenue and then the police left, Tang said.

There were no arrests.

Nearby Roger Young of Lake Forest, Calif., retired from the army after 30 years, stood with a sign that read: “U.S. Marine Corps Defending Berkeley’s right to be a Laughing Stock since 1975.”

Police could not be reached for further comment.

Meanwhile in Mountain View, Grandmothers for Peace were at the Armed Services Recruiting Center at noon. “They call it a career center,” organizer Gayle Sredaozic told the Planet, noting that their action is in sympathy with protesters that have been speaking out against the recruiting center in Berkeley.

I suspect there are laws on the books that would apply to people like this. And frankly, I wish our government would get off it’s ass and put them to good use.

Only in the bay area would people consider this anything but the march of the degenerates with half-a-set of teeth.

ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and Racism)

Sorry, does not equate. Maybe they are too illiterate to figure that one out.

I wish a few of our congressmen or women would speak out with some plain language directed at Berkley (Sh*ttown); obviously Pelosi won’t. Aren’t there some violations of federal laws involved here, and where is the FBI?

The petition

We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Council’s treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws it’s action.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”

The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.

The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

All public funding to both cities should be cut for 10 years.

Hopefully doing something more important that stopping idiots in Berkeley from making fools of themselves.

Don't waste tax dollars trying to stop or prosecute these idiots, but cut off ALL federal funds to Berkeley, and forbid the national guard from lending any emergency aid to the city of Berkeley.

Tell banks in Berkeley that after 90 days, the FDIC will no longer insure deposits in their banks and that they must notify all their customers of that within 30 days.

Forbid any federal student aid going to any student at the University of California-Berkeley.

End federal aid to their primary and secondary education as well.

If they want to rebel, let them suffer the financial consequences. Give it six months or so, and then arrest the relatively few protesters that remain and either prosecute them or ship them off to mental institutions where they belong if they aren't deemed fit to stand trial.

I live in Mtn. View and these fools are on major street corners with signs protesting the war. On a side note I was in San Francisco this weekend and passed by a Military Recruiting Center and there was anti-military chalk writing all over the sidewalk in front of it. It said something like “code pink was here.” I used my foot to mess up as much as I could out of respect for our military.

A friend of mine has a high school son that’s joining the Marines. He wants to sign up at the Berkeley Marine recruiting station. His dad said he’ll stand outside and smoke.

From what I understand, the Berkeley USMC recruiting station is for officer recruitment from nearby colleges, universities and college grads.
