Arizona Senator John McCain wins handily in Wisconsin while showing stronger support among the Republican Partys base.
Self-identified Republicans made up more than 7 of 10 voters, and they went for McCain by 22 points - 58 percent to 36 percent for Huckabee.
Conservatives also went for McCain by 4 percentage points, and among those voters who consider themselves somewhat conservative McCain wins 55 percent to Huckabees 38 percent.
McCain even wins among frequent conservative talk radio listeners. These voters make up 28 percent of primary participants, and they went for McCain over Huckabee by 20 points.
Again today, the retired naval aviator garners the support of veterans. Vets make up almost one quarter of voters, and they chose McCain over Huckabee by a significant 63 percent to 31 percent.
Voters also clearly think that McCain is the best Republican to defeat the Democratic nominee in November. A solid majority of more than 8 of 10 voters picked McCain.

Tom Coburn on John McCain at CPAC
I think maybe Texas will be the confirmation. Or, not.
I think the 'I'll NEVER vote for him!!!' phase has cooled off. After a few days of The Obama Love Networks' puffery, any sane conservative is going to think "Am I going to sit by and let an outright socialist run my country?"
McCain ain't my choice, but he's so very much better than any dem.
You are probably right. The frustration factor is becoming replaced by the stark realization that two of these candidates are equal to certain death, while the other may make you sick, but you may live.
Interestingly enough, I happened to catch McCain speaking last night, after a (hold on to your hat) win.
He looked eighty years old, and about as inspiring as a corpse.
Then as I was switching channels, before retiring, I saw David Letterman sticking needles in McCain. All to do with his age.
This has only just begun for McCain. The voting population has become so completely dumbed down that "change" means something to them. They are young and interested in Obama, American Idol, Oprah, and Jerry Springer.
In short McCain will not get elected, but humiliated in a crushing defeat. Hillary will be forced to step aside, (despite her planned coup of the "super delegates") and Barak Hussein Obama, Jr. will be elected.
I sincerely hope I am wrong.
However, turnout of the conservative base in Nov is still in flux.
It all depends on the Veep pick now. That way those who dislike McCain can still vote for a conservative.
I hope he picks our Sen.DeMint
The demonization of McCain by the same media that loved him starts now--and he will NOT react well to that betrayal. We will see video of him, when he's had a tough poll or two, swearing at the reporters on the Straight Talk Express.
What he'd LIKE to say to them is "I thought we were friends! I passed McCain-Feingold and stuff!"
McCain looks bad so easily on TV, and it's so easy to make Obama or HRC look good--and they won't ask a single tough question or ask about policy for the next year.
In my lifetime, the pick of a VP has never swung an election that I’m aware of, and we’re whistling past the grave if we think that matters.
... I think the ‘I’ll NEVER vote for him!!!’ phase has cooled off ...”
Cooled off? Perhaps. But I still will not be part of encouraging the GOP in the direction they seem to have taken. I am quite wure there are a lot of Dems who are wondering who has hijacked their party.
“Disgusting” and “more disgusting”, are not choices I will accept.
This time it’s diferent.McCain is anathema to conservatives and many will NOT vote for him.
With a real conservative sharing the ticket, they can rationalize that they are voting for him and not McCain—especially since McCain is old and not in the best of health.
We the people have been manipulated out of our socks.
I'm scrounging another pair, or two, and will hunker down with my supplies, and prepare for the fight.
It's going to be good one.
It ain't nothing new. Nixon, Ford, G HW Bush, and even George W. Bush (although he presented himself as a conservative) were a bunch of centrists just like McCain. At least McCain keeps a tight hand on the pocketbook, which is more than I can say for some of those others.
You may have something there. I'm seeing that idea expressed a lot.
I don’t think he’s any different than the dems. He won’t win anyway because the media will go after him tooth and nail as soon as he has the nomination. I still am not voting for him, Obama or not. McCain gives the worst speeches I have ever seen. Kind of like a wet sweaty gym sock. He inspires NOTHING! I thought Bob Dole was boring...but because I knew he was good and decent man, I voted for him anyway. I am not going to be suckered this time around. I am no longer a Republican.
Yeah, people complain about Bob Dole, but he never held a knife in his hands with a Republican’s name on it. You can’t say that about John McCain. Nor can you condemn his character the way you can over and over again with McCain.
-he wasn’t trying to get more gun control laws passed with Lieberman:

and;
-he wasn’t trying to enact strict mandatory limits of greenhouse gases on the energy industry:

but sadly, he IS, so...I just can’t vote for the guy.

McCain ain't my choice, but he's so very much better than any dem.
Sorry to rain on your little parade, pal, but have you looked at the numbers? McQueeg's winning totals are generally less than the losing dem tally.
It's not going to matter whether or not recalcitrant Conservatives hop aboard the McKoolaid express or not. I've come to the unhappy realization that there just aren't that many of us to matter, election-wise.
As for McCain being "better than any dem," I really must say that over the past several years, I am unable to discern any real difference. (Can you say, "Gang of 14"?, "McCain-Kennedy"?, "McCain-Lieberman" and of course "McCain-Feingold"?)
I really don't think he will nominate any "strict constructionists" to any potential SCOTUS opening. Why? So that they can declare his legislation unconstitutional? I don't think so.
No matter who wins in November, it's going to be a bumpy ride for Conservatives. Buckle up.
You are not wrong. This has that 1996 all over again feel to it. I even have figured out the campaign slogan — “Bob Dole, without any of the F%(#%! party loyalty s%@!*”.”
I am somewhat disappointed in the GOP — now that the rats and independents in NH and FL got to choose the GOP nominee, the party rank and file are being good little sheep and going to where they have been told.
How many voted in the Republican primary versus the Democrat primary...? State by state the liberals are geared up and vote, same cannot be said on the Republican side.
Most conservatives, Republicans and other independents will back during the Nov elections.
The few others who wont are not really conservatives but rather can be described as far right belonging to the buchanan camp.
The title of this thread is hilarious. Wide Margin? Who else were they supposed to vote for. Huckleberry?
All you had to do was look at the total of votes between the R’s and D’s.
The R side shows a bad turnout and a slaughter for the GOP.
But, that is to be expected when a really bad candidate is shoved our way. No voter excitement. What a yawner.
Not with me or my family. That backstabbing puke will NEVER get a vote from us. If you think that it’s going to be back to business as usual take a look at the number of Rep voters vs the number of Rats. It was about 2.5:1. We’ve got another 1996 election only more so.
