Montana officials are warning that if the Supreme Court rules in the D.C. gun ban case that the right to keep and bear arms protects only state-run militias like the National Guard, then the federal government will have breached Montana's statehood contract.
Nobody is raising flags for the Republic of Montana, but nobody is kidding, either. So far, 39 elected Montana officials have signed a resolution declaring that a court ruling of the Second Amendment is a right of states and not of individuals would violate Montana's compact.
"The U.S. would do well to keep its contractual promise to the states that the Second Amendment secures an individual right now as it did upon execution of the statehood contract," Montana Secretary of State Brad Johnson said in a Feb. 15 letter to The Washington Times.
The resolution also was signed by Rep. Denny Rehberg, Montana's lone Republican congressman, and state Sen. Roy Brown, who is running to unseat Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat.
The dispute goes back more than a century. Back in 1889, the settlers of the Montana territory struck a deal with the federal government: They agreed to join the union, and the government agreed that individuals had the right to bear arms.
That has worked fine for the past 118 years, but the Supreme Court is expected next month to hear oral argument in District of Columbia v. Heller, the appeal of a federal court decision striking down the District's gun-ownership ban on Second Amendment grounds.
The high court has not issued a broad ruling on Second Amendment law in almost 70 years, including the key question of whether it provides an individual right, like speech and jury trial, or a "collective right" held by state governments.

There is no such thing as a “silly” round. Not even a .25 ACP. With some of the weaker calibers, you just need to be a LOT more accurate in your shot place to be effective.
There is no such thing as a "collective right". To even consider such a concept is to fundamentally abdicate the basis of our government and the Constitution which defines it.
Let's hope our SC understands that and "infringement" (as in you have the individual RKBA but government entities can "regulate" that right--IOW infringe on it).

No, not at all. Because if I really needed a home defense weapon and all I had was an antique henry rimfire, i woulda sold it long time ago for impressive coin. Then bought a glock or a stainless smith, or maybe two or three of each.
Or, If I had an attachment to the old museum piece, I would’ve sold some of the ammo and bought an old police issue revolver and keep the henry locked in a safe.
The fact remains, anything is better than nothing. Although, having "something", absent the will to use it, is pointless.

That’s not quite what I had in mind though. I was thinking that if I could get my hands on a dozen old 303s with throat erosion for maybe $35 bucks a rifle, I could do the ream job on them and get about 5000 rounds of russian ammo and I’d have myself a fairly impressive doomsday arsenal to hide somewhere and forget about. And for not too much cash either. I could think of a few other goodies to add to it too.
Same idea, we cache stuff for a rainy day and figure such tools have to be cheap enough to abandon or suffer a theft if discovered. we look at spring set so go with revolvers and bolt guns for the most part or MAK90’s with the springs removed from the rifles and the magazines, Extensive efforts to leave Sino Soviet ammo tins intact and unopened / sealed as they look at long term storage as well. Their efforts are quality and reliable for the most part making anyone good or poor quality cache reliable as well.

I bought one of those Ishapore Enfields in 7.62 NATO kind of on a whim a couple years back. Paid $125.00 for it. Obviously it's a mil-surp so I had it checked out, headspaced, etc.
The gunsmith told me that it had probably only been fired a few times at most.
That thing has one of the smoothest and fastest bolt actions I've ever fired. It's also accurate out to 400 yards. Can't say if it's capable of better as I've never had the opportunity to test it beyond that range.
The magazine holds 10 rounds.
I liked it so much I bought 2 more. The first one I 'sporterized'. I hung a four power scope on it and it's a darn handy little hunting rifle.
The other two I had checked with similar results, cleaned 'em up, zero'd them, and put them into 'storage' along with a quantity of US Lake City surplus 7.62 ammo for each.
Those old Enfields are capable of much better than 'minute of man' I'll tell you. Ringing a 10 skillet at 400 yards over iron sights is childs play for those things.
Are they heavy? Yep.
Are they old? Yep.
Do they go 'bang' every time you pull the trigger? Yep.
Are they worth having? F****** A they are.
And when I pull old Mr. Enfield out at the range and some smart ass goes "whatcha gonna do with that antique old man?" I just smile and put 10 rounds in the black faster than that young punk can spit.
Then I just smile and say "Oh, I don't know. It could come in handy someday..." More often than not someone asks me where I got it and if any more are available.
Wish I'd bought half a dozen of 'em now...

I have one with a SWAT 10 x 24 scope, will hold sub-minute easily at 100 yards. With a 16 inch barrel no less. Plan on a trigger upgrade though.

With my 'antique' M1A (civilian version of the M14) I can put a round through your head at 800 yards and one through your buddies chest before he ever hears the shots that killed you both.
You might want to drop by Camp Perry someday during the National Matches. You'd be suprised just how many of those 'antique' M14 variants you'll see winning long distance matches.
You write many words, yet seem to have very little practical knowledge.
From a concealed position me and my 'antique' M1A can make sure that nothing I object to lives in a 1600 yard radius. We may be old, but we'll still wreck your whole day my friend.
