He was not a theocrat, but that is not the same as being godless. As far as I know, he was a faithful Catholic.
There are Catholics who are theocrats (mainly monarchists), but Buckley was not among them.
This guy (Lofton) seems to be a dispensationalist theocrat. Not my cup of tea. Takes all kinds, I suppose.
There must be a specific flavor of godly that is required of one to be considered sufficiently "conservative" by some specific group of conservatives. Is there a rulebook somewhere?

While I don’t necessarily agree with every jot or tittle either man ever wrote or said, I have to say that given the choice to stand with Buckley, Kirk, and their friends, versus Lofton, its an easy choice.
Buckley is a giant.
You can argue that the GOP is insufficiently conservative, and its true, you can argue that it sells its principles too cheap, and that is also true. You can say that the US is going to pay a high price for forgetting the principles that have guided it throughout its history and that is also true.
You can’t lay that at the feet of Buckley, who spent his life fighting the good fight. Rest in peace.

Listening to FoxNews' tribute (I do some of my best reading in documentaries) I find it revealing that Buckley called himself first, as a young man, an "individualist," then deigned to call himself a conservative. I think that speaks volumes about Buckley's perspective.
It's not quite mine -- I'd grasp "conservative" in a minute, if it means conserving the principles and ideals of the Declaration and Constitution, in that order and of our founders' ideals. That includes the sovereignty of the individual but to make a stronger distinction with libertarian "heresy," it does not set apart as preeminent individuals standing individually. (Whittaker Chambers helped significantly there as I glean, at least with his NR Review of Atlas Shrugged.)
IOW, it ain't about popular sovereignty in government if it ain't about the governance of a whole society, even a culture full of us individuals, which is responsible to "God's law," as Huckabee edgily said. I'm comfortable between Buckley and Lofton while recognizing that Buckley was the most messianic, Mosaic conservative figure for our time, politically. Maybe we all need to be a bit more like Joshua, now -- hopefully together instead of "hanging separately."

That particular ant farm is stirred up lately because, on some level, the theocratic faction of the religious right (which should be carefully distinguished from the majority) recognizes that the war against Islamic Fundamentalist terrorism does to them what the war against Naziism did to genteel anti-Semitism. (For those keeping score at home, that would be “banished it from polite society because it too clearly resembles raw evil”.)

Maybe the Roman Catholics could start the reconciliation process by lifting the Papal bull declaring Martin Luther a heretic. I don't want to hijack this thread but BOTH sides allow the gulf between the RCs and the Protestants to exist. However, you are correct that name calling and provocative speech accomplish nothing.
My first thought as well. However, many in the conservative movement have been heavily influenced by Ayn Rand's philosophies, including her atheism.
You sound confused.. about rights and privileges..
It was the Declaration of Independance from privileges(granted by Monarchy) "TO" rights(granted by God)..
