Actually I have just done a lot of reading on the case.

Helter Skelter was used as a tool to justify actions to a handful of seriously drug addled kids. But, even without the fairy tale he spun, those few kids he had kill for him would have done anything he said, and had been doing so for several months. It’s hard to say how much of the insanity Manson actually believed, but what is known is that the guy was a total con-man, so it is very easy to believe he didn’t believe any of it and just created the BS to get more control over the family. Given the fact that everything he says in interviews is STILL completely self-serving and manipulative I really doubt he sincerely meant much of what he said at Spahn Ranch.

The Manson mystique was just something created by a man who wanted to inflate his own sense of self-worth. The spectacular nature of the stories surrounding the crimes are a lot more titillating than saying that Manson had drug addicts kill people in a house he assumed was occupied by a man he hated. Manson perpetuates it to stay, in his own mind, relevant. Bugliosi and many others perpetuate it to make the stories they are selling even more spectacular.

The problem with Manson is most people don’t realize that while he is evil, most of his “insanity” is an act.

The Manson family members currently in prison are already serving life sentences — the maximum penalty allowed at the time the crimes were committed.

IIRC the article is incorrect when it stated the above. I believe Manson was given the death penalty, which California then had, prior to the Supreme Court ending all then current death penalties. Everyone on death row was then converted to lifers. If they can find bodies, and if they can find sufficient evidence at this late date to link them to Charlie and if they can do so in a way that fits the new California death penalty - a lot of ifs - then maybe Charlie's groupies, and his endless run of parole hearings, can receive the fate that he and his first jury justly deserve.

Charles Manson is exactly like Jim Jones without the final dying orgy. But that’s where they were headking.

Here's a clip from an up coming documentary called "Helter Skelter"

This guy that did this has website called "Find a Death" that's filled with all kinds of stuff on Hollywood's famous and infamous. (Check the directory)

It's pretty interesting. You can look up what ever happened to the stars of your favorite old shows.

Manson was and is first and foremost a con artist. His natural habitat is a jail cell. No dout it was in jail that he learned how to manipulate people, how to exercise power over them and how to convince them of their dependence on him. His exposure to Scientology was just a bonus. It never hurts to put a religious gilding on a con.

The book “The Family” by Ed Sanders explores much of the occult side of Charles Manson. Later versions have references to the Church of The Process deleted but Sanders lays out a very good case on its influence on Manson.

Manson relied on mind control techniques beloved by cult leaders everywhere. “ Manchurian Candidates R Us”. He made sure his followers always had access to mind altering drugs. Belladonna was a favorite. He “love bombed” them. He presented an us vs them world view. He encouraged an apocalyptic vision. He dictated the sexual encounters of his followers. He kept them isolated from family and others outside the cult. He made them listen to endless ramblings of his indoctrination. When he read about Jim Jones I bet his reaction was “hey why didn’t I think of that?”

I have no doubt that Manson and his followers were guilty of more murders. Some are reported in the book I mention by Sanders. Most were probably over drug deals gone bad but some were probably done to increase Manson’s control over his followers. He really liked the idea of living the fear.

"That should have some clarification. Charlie, and three of his angels, were sentenced to death. The California Supreme Court repealed the death penalty a year latter. "

I may not be remembering this correctly, but I believe that it was the US Supreme Court that outlawed all death penalties (1972?) which were then reinstituted under new laws.

Now I’m not sure which Supreme Court overturned Manson’s conviction- Here’s a link for the overturning of the death penalty in 1972 by USSC-http://groups.msn.com/usdeathpenalty/

According to the book “Helter Skelter” It may never be known how many people they killed, but a good guess could be near one hundred.
The chair is too good for this scum. Breaking him on the wheel would be better.

The same issue was before both the California and the USSC courts at the same time. California ruled first.

Then after the USSC ruled, Richard Speck and all other death row immates got guaranteed meals for the rest of their lives.

.

"While the nation waited for the Supreme Court decision, two state supreme courts returned opinions of their own, striking down the death penalty in New Jersey and California and automatically commuting all sentences in those states to life imprisonment."
