Gunshots bring abrupt end to frantic 911 call

WEST COVINA, California (AP) -- A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence.

She was shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said.

"Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call.

The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

"At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry," Rosenberg said.

Investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken, Deputy Luis Castro said.

While police were investigating the shooting, a man arrived at the home asking about his wife.

When he heard that the woman had been shot and killed, he collapsed and started to cry, saying "No! She just called me. You lie."

The man was placed in a patrol car and taken to a sheriff's station, police said.

Witnesses said they saw one or more men running from the house, Rosenberg said. Investigators used bloodhounds to conduct yard-to-yard searches.

No arrests had been made by Thursday morning, deputies said.

As a precaution during the search, a high school and an elementary school were locked down for about two hours, police Lt. Dan Brooks said.

This kind of stuff almost never happens out here in PA.

Burglars know that every 3rd home here has a 12 guage locked and loaded.

A fella that lives down the street had a break-in years ago. He blew off both the robber's hands with a shotgun when he tried to attack with a bat. I don't think the thief will ever be stealing again.

“At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry,” Rosenberg said.

They stole someone's life.

Contrast this with the self defense stories up in the front of every American Rifleman mag.

I’d be calling the front desk, telling them to bring a garbage truck.

911 is for emergencies, and pickin’ up the trash ain’t one.

The only benefit to a warning shot is to the intruder, whom you’ve just warned that you have a gun.

NEVER pull a weapon or fire a shot unless you are going to shoot to kill.

NEVER, because that person if armed is very likely to shoot you. When you pull that weapon, immediately shoot to kill.

There is one exception and I used it once. When the bad guy was running and I shot straight into the ground to scare him bad enough that he would make a mistake. It is a long story, documented in our local paper, but the bottom line is that it worked.

It scared the guy so bad that he left all manner of identifying objects and we had him within an hour.

Cut out the middlemen and just dial the coroner’s office for a pickup.

You’re being far too kind.
The coroner’s office is for dead “human beings”.

My “garbage truck” and “trash” references were part of the message.

Now we’ll get to hear how ‘bad’ guns are in the majority of coverage by the media in the aftermath, instead of how one could have saved a life.

This incident should have ended like this one:

Yeh You are right about shooting a gun w/ intent to kill.
I have a handgun but I never did any formal training with it. Education is key when dealing w/ a deadly weapon. Thanks for the education that I need more of it.

“...if you want protection from the bad guys - GET A GUN!”

No, no, no! Only the elitists have the right to protect themselves, and the fact that you are on FR makes me think that you’re not an elitist.

“Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.”

Ok, but at least she didn’t break any gun laws.
