Police: Man Dies After SEPTA Concourse Confrontation (Beaten to death at Phili Subway Station)

The incident occurred at about 2:35 p.m. before the turnstiles on the Market-Frankford Line concourse at 13th and Market streets, police said.

One adult male was taken to Jefferson University Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Police said homicide investigators have been summoned to the scene.

A transit police sergeant was on patrol on the eastbound platform at the time of the incident.

"While on patrol, he notices across the way, on the westbound concourse, a white male adult, about 30-years-old, and he's being confronted by four, young black males. A disturbance is obvious to him. He goes to investigate," said Capt. Steven Harold of the transit police agency.

Police said the man, who worked at a nearby Starbucks, appeared to be a in a defensive mode, as if threatened by the teens.

As the transit police sergeant approached, he radioed in that a fight was possibly in progress. The juvenile males fled down the concourse, while the man was in some type of physical distress.

SEPTA police said they took one male into custody on the concourse, near 11th Street, in connection with the case.

"The man goes into what appears to be cardiac arrest. He's unable to give any information as to what actually was transpiring," Harold said.

The man was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead.

Authorities said they are now trying to determine the extent of the physical altercation.

"The sergeant's view was observing some type of disturbance that the male was having with these four youth," Harold said.

Police did not release a description of any other juveniles possibly involved in the incident.

Commuters were being turned away from the westbound entrance but service on the Market-Frankford Line was not disrupted.

Philadelphia and SEPTA police have launched a joint investigation into the incident.

The most unsafe time to ride was when the thugs, er students, got out of school. Freaking animals.

"I was about two blocks away at a trade show when this happened.

I’d been thinking about bringing a handgun with me on this trip. PA recognizes my state’s permit, but I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle to check it on the airplane, etc. I think this is the last time I’ll make that decision."

You know The Feral Looktm when you see it. If you take a stroll past City Hall near the end of the business day, you will see it (had an interview in the vicinity last year). And the city leaders wonder why they have no tax base. I've turned down Philly-based $115k/year Java coding jobs that would pay at most 80k in the suburbs. That's how un-appealing the place is, and that's how hard they have to try to attract people. I'll stay in my nice, safe area, thank you very much. If the people in the city want to be animals then they can rot for all I care.

Don’t worry, whatever they did to you had you been caught would’ve only made the news if you turned up dead, simple robbery and assault of unsuspecting whites is probably just the norm.

Does PA not have preemption? I thought it did, but I’d definitely double-check that kind of thing before I carried out of state.

The thugs, of course, will not be checking any federal, state, or local statutes before committing any gun/knife/bare-fist crimes. But I’d like to know whether I’m allowed to be on an even playing field with them when I go somewhere.

Can you imagine doing that now?

I was in professional school in the 70s. One day I was walking from the North Broad Street station up to the hospital. A pimp in a full blown pimp outfit and pimp-mobile stopped and said, “You wana ride with me, Mama?” I laughed and said that I was busy that day! :-)

Later in the late 90s I worked in a clinic across the street from Hunting Park and at another clinic one block from K and A.

Those were the days! :-)

Was born there. Left when I was six. But we went well out of sight of the house and nobody minded. But with an acre right in the middle of the city we had lots of room to play.

When they do this story on CSI, the black yutes will have been assisting the man when he goes into cardiac arrest. The videotaped footage from a bystander will make it appear as if the man had been attacked. Nick and Archie will analyze the audio and find out that the the four perps are asking if the man wants a cracker, not, is he a cracker.

Was this guy a typical white person who went into cardiac arrest at the sight of four black people? It’s too bad he missed Barry’s historical speech, it might have saved his life. Or, maybe he did hear it and Barry’s advice turned out to be wrong when the four black youths decided to act like typical black thugs. Does Barry want us to try and understand the frustration and anger of these black youths?

I couldn’t tell you; this is only the second time I’ve been to Philadelphia and both times were/are short business trips. But in general the answer is going to be liberal government policies. They pay people not to be productive, fail to punish criminal behavior, create barriers to gainful employment, and ensure a large supply of passive, disarmed victims. The results are utterly unsurprising.

The boob flashing crack whores at Kensington and Allegheyney are particularly nauseating. Hunting Park Avenue is beautiful.

I kept my horse in Fairmount Park during the 70's. Great, Great times. All in all, a fine city gone to the dogs since Goode bombed West Philly.

a) This is what the government expects us to put up with as we give up our evil cars and switch to public transportation in order to save the planet. Well, no bleeping thanks.

b) I understand exactly the incidents you described, and I honestly think they have less to do with racial politics than they do with the nearly universal phenomenon in the underclass of fatherlessness. You can always tell the kids who grew up without a father in the house: You bump into them on the street and they’re ready to kill you. It’s one of the reasons I don’t go into Philly anymore, ever.

Race is a foil for man's inherent willingness to hate his fellow man.

I learned a lot from those experiences.

In New York, you ride the subway everywhere. The subway's not bad now. Can't imagine what it must have been like when the Guardian Angels were around.

I remember. Moved out of NYC in '77. Will never live in a city again. Never.

Four against one...

Unfair, isn't it? This is where even a 5-shot .38 snubby would be your best friend(s). Probably, if you shot one, or even showed it, the rest would run.

Carrying a gun is a serious responsibility, though. You have to imagine scenarios like this and think through what you will do, and how you will do it.

There's no time to figure it out when a gang is in your face. If you're mentally ready and you're prepared, they will sense it and know you're not a victim.

I am blessed by living in a nice, crime-free rural area where things like this rarely happen. I don't always carry. However, I should. You never know.
