Syria drafting reserves in preparation for Israeli attack
The Jerusalem Post ^

Posted on 04/02/2008 12:15:25 AM PDT by maquiladora

Damascus is preparing for a large-scale Israeli attack on Syria and Hizbullah, London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported Wednesday.

According to the report, the Syrian army has been maneuvering its forces and drafting some of its reserve forces in preparation for such a contingency.

Damascus has also raised the alert level along its borders, and has placed three armored divisions, nine infantry brigades and special forces near its border with Lebanon's Bekaa valley, fearing an Israeli infiltration there. The report claimed that this would be a strategic spot for Israeli ground forces to strike, as it is both a Hizbullah stronghold and positions troops in close range of the Syrian capital.

Syria viewed recent comments by IDF officials as preparation of the groundwork to justify an Israeli assault, the paper stated. It was not stated which remarks were being referred to.

Meanwhile, sources in Syria said the nation's interior ministry would this weekend announce the results of its investigation into the death of Hizbullah terror-chief Imad Mughniyeh. The report was likely to lay the blame for the assassination on Mossad as well as certain Arab sources.

IF Israel would defeat Syria and the USA takes out Iran, exactly which Mideast state would remain a terror problem for us? Answer, none. Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are problematic but their governments are mostly friendly and controllable. This should have been the plan all along.

Reminds me of one of the stories from the early 80’s during the fighting in Bekaa.

Supposedly the Syrians went to their mentors in the USSR and asked for some more anti-aircraft missiles.

The Soviets said “we already sent you 1,000 surface-to-air missiles”.

The Syrians responded, “we already used the surface-to-air missiles. Now we need some surface-to-plane missiles”.

I think the loan of a few Stealth bombers to Israel would make it like going to Wisconsin to buy beer for them. The thing is that then we would be involved and blamed for the entire thing. If it does happen though....I would be all for the Patton theory of.....Syria, Iran, Somalia, anything west of and including the mountains in Pakistan, Then with a strong breath of sigh, whisper out.......who’s next!

But I thought Iraq was going to pay for itself with lower gas prices.... you mean if you shut off the spickets, the rules of supply and demand still apply?! </s>

Every decade or so, Syria has this irresistible urge to get their asses kicked by the Israelis.

Guess the cycle is speeding up.

Israel attacks Lebanon after being provoked by Hezbollah. This in turn provokes a Syrian response. When Israel responds with attacks on Syria, Iran fires ballistic missles at Tel Aviv allowing the USAF to attack targets in Iran. Possible? Just conjecturing :-)

“clueless condi still pushing jorge bush’s peace plan!!!!!”

Ahh.. Think about it for a minute.

Iran & Syria launch missile attacks, Israel repels them and launches their own. I believe Israel will come out ahead. Now without Syria and Iran, what do the hezzies have to fall back on? They will be forced to negotiate peace with Israel because Israel can then take their time and roll up the terrorists.

Right now it is containment. IMHO Israel still feels safe. But once they are backed into a corner, I would rather have a rabid pitbull mauling me then what Israel is capable of doing.
