Blumenthal Claims Inside Knowledge that McCain Flirted with Leaving GOP

Clinton campaign adviser points to presumptive GOP nominee's positions on torture, taxes, global warming, tobacco and health care as evidence.

Could John McCain have been the Independent or Democratic senator from Arizona?

Though that sounds awkward, especially in the midst of a presidential race with McCain as the GOP’s nominee, but one Washington insider claimed McCain considered abandoning the Republican Party.

According to Sidney Blumenthal, a senior adviser for former President Bill Clinton and current adviser to Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, at one point McCain was going to leave the Republican Party and caucus with Senate Democrats.

“And although he doesn’t want to talk to reporters about it now, there was a time and I was privy to some of those who were involved, did conduct negotiations through third parties about whether or not he would leave the Republican Party and become an independent more or less aligned in the Senate with the Democrats,” said Blumenthal on April 1. Blumenthal did not say when those negotiations took place.

Although McCain has disappointed some members of the conservative movement, Blumenthal said he did not think this would hurt McCain on Election Day.

(snip)

Blumenthal even supplied advice for McCain.

“So I do not think this will hurt him and if I were advising McCain right now, I would say he’s slightly overreacting to his conservative base,” McCain said. “I don’t think he needs to do that so much. I think they don’t have any choice right now.

Even a blind pig finds an acorn now and them - I’m sure McCain would have left the GOP in a heartbeat if he’d thought doing so would get him a shot at the White House.

McCain is a lunatic, not a “loose cannon,” not a “maverick.”

Sorry, Sid - old news.

It's already been documented that McInsane was going to jump but Jeffords beat him to it. And McInsane being McInsane, he was going to be 2nd to no one, so he didn't jump, officially anyway.

But looking at his voting record for '01 he might as well have. His ACU rating was a 68 that year. However, not to be outdone - even by himself - last year it was a 65.

And 'we' are supposed to vote for him because .... ??? /s

I don’t really care to be honest - maybe he did maybe didn’t.

What bothers me more is the Sid really knows how to push buttons with some people here at FR.

I guess the Klinton smear machine is on full load.

No surprise. We already knew he was Kerry’s pal and potential VP man.

Absolutely. Thank you for posting that. Didn’t Blumenthal just get arrested for something? A DUI maybe? I don’t remember the circumstances. Is he trying to make himself look relevant again to his former associates? Shifting the focus? He is not a man to be trusted. If the dems have to trot him out to make this kind of point, I’ll be more determined that ever to vote for McCain.

By the way, I don't think I ever heard of "aggravated" drunk driving before....

NASHUA, N.H. — A senior adviser to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton was arrested and charged with aggravated drunken driving a day before the New Hampshire primary. Nashua police said Sidney Blumenthal was arrested early Monday after an officer pulled over a car traveling 70 mph in a 30 mph zone. (January 13, 2008)

In other news, Lucky Lindy made it to France, landing at Le Bourget.

I think Sidney's revelation is merely designed to make 'Pub voters consider a 3rd Party Candidate. The McCaindidacy is looking more appealing to moderates, but less so to Republican grassroots voters, who distrust the RINO.

He’s also the fine, fine fellow who stood outside of the Whitewater grand jury and lied through his teeth with a big snotty smile and without one whit of shame.

He knew Ken Starr and the jurors couldn’t dispute what he claimed happened inside.

Although I don’t doubt John McCain was going to go Democrat. Why on earth would that surprise anyone?

Looks like McCain was several years ahead of many FReepers who have been threatening to do the same thing this year

That's a rather invalid analogy. McCain was going to leave because he is a liberal. Freepers that want to leave are conservatives in a party that is increasingly becoming liberal. A vast difference.

So, people on FR will again Flame McCain for this article, yet so many have come out and stated that they will be leaving the Republican party to become Independents or Libertarians for various reasons. Hypocrites in my opinion.

"I was privy to some of those who were involved, did conduct negotiations through third parties about whether or not he would leave the Republican Party."

Is this a cut and paste job? It's not even a sentence. Who conducted negotiations with whom?

Sorry this is an innuendo at best.

Well, as predicted by many on FR, this is why the Democrats and the Mainstream Media wanted McCain: Because they knew it would drive a wedge between Conservatives and the Republican Party.

The Mindless Middle may decide elections, but the Base wins them.

McCain is a horrible candidate, but they know he’s all we’ve got. They just hope we don’t donate, campaign, volunteer...and they hope a good portion of Conservatives simply stay home.

If the polls are close towards election day, the Democrats/MSM will either protray McCain as a “crazy right winger” or “a left of center” candidate. It depends on how much support McCain gets from Conservatives in the next few months.

It’s a sticky situation. One the MSM has hoped for the past eight years.
