MEMPHIS — Hillary Rodham Clinton called for a cabinet-level poverty czar and John McCain said he was wrong to vote a quarter century ago against a federal holiday in memory of Martin Luther King Jr. as both presidential candidates converged here on Friday for the 40th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination.
Sen. John McCain spoke at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, the site where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed 40 years ago. From the Memphis church where King delivered his last sermon on the evening before he was gunned down by James Earl Ray, Mrs. Clinton gave her support to an idea long advocated by the King family, a cabinet position that she said would be “solely and fully devoted to ending poverty as we know it, that will focus the attention of our nation on this issue and never let it go.”
Mrs. Clinton added: “No more excuses, no more whining, but instead a concerted effort.”

If you want to have an immediate effect on poverty in America...announce the top ten most poverty-ridden areas (to include East St Louis and and most of west Virginia)...then turn to the vast government agency mess in DC...and select 150,000 functions to move out of DC...to these ten areas. Rather than concentrate all of this government money into one area (Virginia, Maryland and DC)...lets spread the wealth.
Along the way...we can admit that there was no necessity in maintaining all of these agencies in DC...in this modern age. We can admit that even the FBI headquarters could be in Kansas City and serve just as well. We could admit alot of things. Course...none of the 150,000 folks affected would ever agree to move and they’d raise a huge fuss...especially when you mention a whole agency sitting in East St Louis. But the truth is...its all money that runs down into the local community and its what makes Virginia and Maryland wealthy today. You really don’t see much poverty in either state (I know some of you will disagree on that but reality is different if you traveled across the entire US and seen the comparisons of poverty in all the states).
I will admit having a poverty czar...simply means dumping $500 million into some pit...and watching it disappear with no real change in life within America. And $500 is awful low on the estimate scale. But if Hillary was to create such a position...let her pick some military general who has little sympathy for folks sitting around and let him get these people charged up and motivated to improve their situation in life. We don’t someone who bows to the poverty-class...as if they were simply handing out monthly stimulus packages...forever and forever.
Bill Clinton put the Drug Czar into the Cabinet. But he also cut down the department to 20% of its prior size and budget. And drug use went up during the 1990s noticeably (as well as teenage pregnancy).
Hillary has no more idea how to stop poverty than Santa Claus. Don’t want to be poor? Go to school, don’t have children before you get married and don’t get married until you finish high school at least. A ‘poverty czar’ in the Clinton universe is probably the person who hands out the welfare payments and sues rich people who are mean to them.
