Ad expanding Mexico 'hearkens to ideal time'(Absolut Vodka)
worldnetdaily.com ^ | April 04, 2008 | staff

Posted on 04/05/2008 6:41:27 AM PDT by kellynla

A vodka advertisement that put California, Arizona and several other southwestern states within the borders of Mexico "hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal," according to the sponsor.

WND reported earlier when a new ad for Absolut vodka reconfigured North America according to the aspirations of many Mexicans, who believe the U.S. Southwest was stolen and should be returned.

Over a redrawn map of the U.S., the ad by the Swedish Absolut Spirits Co. declares, "In an Absolut World," noted columnist and blogger Michelle Malkin.

Major Hispanic civil rights groups in the U.S., such as the National Council of La Raza, are tied to movements advocating a "reconquista," or reconquest, of territory lost when Mexico signed the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo at the end of the Mexican-American War.

Malkin points out the Mexico City-based firm that created the ad, Teran, says its philosophy is advocating "disruption" as a "tool for change" and "agent of growth." The firm encourages "overturning assumptions and prejudices that get in the way of imagining new possibilities and visionary ideas that help create a larger share of the future."

that is not good enough.

They need to run an ad in America that shows the border of the US down to Mexico City which was our territory after the war. We were too kind and gave it back.

Until they make a likewise boneheaded advertising decision that pisses off the reconquista invaders and Mexican alcohol distributors, nothing has been “made right”.

Their apology rings hollow.

Great advertising opportunity for a bar to get the local news over while they smash all their Absolut in the parking lot.

I’d show up (actually, I’d show up without the stunt).

Is there any way we can get the Mexicans fired up and boycotting Absolut because they buckled under to the "Yanquis"? Might as well destroy them in two markets if we can.

I think we should spread this aricle far and wide, so much so that Absolut can actually quantify their losses.

If we annexed it today, that would be the case.

If what is now Northern Mexico had remained war tested Texan territory, the corrupt officials would never have gotten control of the region and things would not be so bad off there. Except maybe in the sourthern most “border” region.

There were people who thought prohibition of alcoholic beverages would lead to an ideal world as well. They even succeeded for a few years in passing a constitutional amendment. Maybe we should ban Absolut Vodka from being imported and explain that we’re just catering to the desired ideals of certain people.

Yes, you’re correct.

What bugs me .. we fought a war for this land - and then we paid Mexico MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR THIS LAND - and now they want it BACK - I don’t call that ideal .. I call that ignorance.

Hispanic groups have been lying to their people for years that we stole it - and it’s going to be up to them to TAKE IT BACK.

Another falacy. If they believe they will reap the reward of the American lifestyle .. they are sadly mistaken. If they can’t reform their own country .. why allow them to ruin ours.

The Hispanic Supremacist groups that claim “we stole it” are agitating for war.

They should be careful about the charges they make. The full force of the US military has been lax in defending our border against the very real border crossings by the Mexican military.

It won’t be painless and those who insist that we “get our of Iraq” because we weren’t attacked will be unable to use that defense in this border conflict.

The invasion can be put to a halt. Alto means stop.

I agree. Furthermore, if we were to cede the territories on the map to Mexico today, everyone knows damn well that in less than ten years they would be just like the rest of Mexico, with millions fleeing to what was left of the US.

The curious part of this stupid ad begs the question of just how many Mexicans either (a) drink vodka as opposed to tequila and (b) if they do, who among the poverty stricken south of the border can even afford to buy this premium swill?

No small wonder they are backpedaling and falling all over themselves to come up with an "explanation," because their largest export market is the United States where close to 73 million litres were sold in 2003 and more than 40% of the imported vodka in the United States is Absolut.

As an aside, which I did not know until yesterday when I was doing a little due diligence on Absolut is this:

Absolut was one of the first consumer brands to openly embrace the gay community and view its members as important and desirable consumers of its product. Its ads have appeared in gay media since 1981, and the company has long sponsored major gay events, including the 2000 fall line of Tom of Finland clothing. In one such ad, a film lupe and film canisters are stacked to form the distinctive shape of the Absolut bottle. The canisters are labeled with the titles of gay films, including "Stonewall," "Boys Life," "Nitrate Kisses," "Show Me Love," and others. The caption reads “Absolut Achievement.” The ad appeared in gay film festivals sponsored by the brand. Absolut Vodka has also been the official corporate sponsor of the GLAAD Media Awards for many years

Indeed. I've posted this before but it bears repeating. What the Hell did they do with the land we let them keep? In 1848 both sides of the border looked the same for hundreds of miles in either direction. We turned our side into a prosperous, wealth-producing area. They turned theirs into a corrupt Hellhole whose main export is desperate poverty-stricken people.

Exactly!!

But .. the liberals have made them a “victim” - so they can have somebody else to blame for their ills .. which is typically how liberals look at things .. and why they are never willing to take responsibility for their mistakes.

I’ve had a lot of problems with McCain - but I was shocked to see him stand before a croud of people and admit he had made a mistake in regard to MLK. Well .. that’s ONE!

That one didn't surprise me. McCain recanted a former conservative position, which is par for his course. He'll gladly say he was wrong for casting conservative votes in his early years in office. He'll never admit to be being in error for his more recent liberal stances, though. He'll just call those who disagree with him bigots and haters.

The Spanish (people actually from Spain) living in the Southwest in 1846 gladly stayed there and became Americans by the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. There were no Spanish inhabitants of the Southwest who were marched to the border and driven into Mexico. It didn’t happen.

If you think I am kidding, read on:

During the 60’s, my family took a vacation to Florida (before there was a Disney World). We stopped for lunch at a Hardees. About 30 miles later, the whole family had burgers & fries coming out both ends. We were sick as dogs! I have NEVER eaten at Hardees since. Ever!

When he chooses his VP - then I will decide if I can vote for him or not.

And .. I do believe Huckabee is behing the “social conservatives don’t want Romney”. I believe Romney would be a good choice - since it gives McCain another voice on the opposite SIDE OF THE ISLE - which McCain claims to covet. It also would give McCain the economic creds he desperately needs.

Yes it did. The numbers were relatively small but there were agitators, notably in California, who were invited to hit the border before the sun went down. Many government officials were not given the opportunity to choose.

For the most part, you are right. The treaty guaranteed a continuation of local customs and most people stayed.

Since Cabaza de Vaca stomped all across the US from Texas all the way up the middle to the northern territories, why doesn’t HE get HIS share of the land? He did that before Spain settled what became known as Mexico. And certainly the people of that era did NOT have claim to Oregon AND Mexico City.
