Scientists inject the vaccine in monkeys on Reu Island, Quang Ninh province in 2004.

Vaccine and Biomedical Product Company 1 on April 3 injected a second dose of H5N1 vaccine in ten volunteers.

Vietnam to produce H5N1 vaccine in 2009

This test aims to verify the safety of H5N1 vaccine in humans. After the injection, all volunteers were in normal condition.

These people will be monitored for seven days more to ensure the safety of the vaccine.

On March 6, these people took the first dose of type A/H5N1 vaccine and no abnormal symptoms were recorded before they were injected with the second dose.

The Health Ministry in early March approved the testing of type A/H5N1 vaccine on humans. This vaccine is produced by a local company, Vabiotech.

The testing, conducted by the Military Health Institute, began in March and will last for eight months. The test features two phases to determine the vaccine’s safety and the suitable dosage.

Last year the vaccine was tested on mice, and was efficacious in preventing them from contracting the toxic A/H5N1.

What is this vaccine for?

H5N1 is the technical shorthand for the strain of type A influenza commonly called bird flu. H stands for hemaglutinin, and N stands for neuraminidase, two of the proteins that the virus makes, IIRC. There are various versions of the proteins; so, they number them to identify the various strains.

Also, once poultry have had a full vaccination course, it is known when they have the full protection offered by the vaccine. I believe this is about 3 weeks after the first injection in a course of two (when inactivated, dead, virus vaccine). There should be information from Vietnam about vaccine efficacy in the field as well.

That's the best I can do that they are not using a live, attenuated virus for the vaccine.
