Voting for McCain, Kinda – A Proposal
Self | 26 April 08 | Grut

Posted on 04/26/2008 12:45:36 PM PDT by Grut

The problem with voting third party (or not at all) instead of for McCain – and O, Lord! I am tempted – is that the Democrat may get in. The problem with voting for McCain as the lesser evil is that the RINOs will claim it's a vote for McCain and 'moderate' Republicans everywhere, declare a 'mandate' and go forth to govern like conservatives don't exist.

What to do?

Here's an idea: how about, instead of pulling the lever or punching the chad or filling in the arrow for McCain, we enter his name on our ballots as a write-in candidate? Should be possible in most states, keeps the Democrat out, provides evidence of how many conservatives are really unhappy with McCain and the party and may even, possibly, pull the RINOs up short.

Well, that last may be a bit too much to hope for but if we publicize the 'write-in' movement very clearly as a protest tactic, at least they won't be able to claim we're in their pocket.

“PSYCHO-FREEP was the one dissing combat vets, but thanks for playing.”

Find me the post on this thread where he dissed combat vets. It’s not here, unless you count his accurate biographical information about McCain.

Calling him a lefty POS because he won’t vote for one is way out of line.

“The arrogance is breathtaking...”

The arrogance of the party is breathtaking, but no more so than the arrogance of most McCain supporters on this forum, who act as if we Freepers somehow owe the party our vote, regardlesss of its loathsome nominee, as if we are not free people with the right to act out of free will. They seem to think if they insult us enough, hurl enough inane vulgarities and mindless invective, we will eventually see things their way.

Hardly. If anything, they cement my view every time I come on one of these threads, because they are as presumptive, arrogant and off-putting as their nominee.

And thanks! I didn’t know my words were cubicle worthy. I stand by them today and I will stand by them on November 4th.

As unhappy as we are with our nominee, any vote against him is a vote (or half a vote) for the Democrat.

I'm not voting for any of the three, as I refuse to betray my principles to such a large extent. I'll have to assess to whom my vote should go (Barr is just one of many options).

>states that vote earlier are often liberal

Not the big ones that count, as in Florida.
I was surprised to see the party internals showing a solid lead for McCain over everybody.
I suspect that Fred saw those same figures and that played a big part in his decision to drop out.

Romney would have been better, but John had the votes here.

I could never vote for the libers after what they have morphed into.
And them demanding a recount in Ohio was nonsense.

Great name, BTW.

>We are at a time in our history where we cannot play games with “protest votes” or throw temper tantrums and stay home.

Protest votes?? How about honest disgust with McCain?
With such charming oratory, why have you not garnered any support at all?

And don’t point your finger at us, again. - its boring now.
Your message is flawed, your King has no clothes, and many of us do not vote for liberals even if they aren’t as low down as the other guy.

Well, I’m just glad that you and your buddies are in the extreme minority.
So I suppose I can’t take your threat of electing Obama too seriously.

Perhaps you just want the Democrats nominating and controlling the vote on judges.

No. But he will secure the borders and have criminal illegals deported.

He already said there will be no amnesty. Regardless there was no “amnesty” even when it was tried for.

I can’t believe that there are Freepers dissing a combat veteran Freeper because he won’t vote for John McCain!

1. Cite to me a post dissing PSYCHO-FREEP. You certainly can't cite a post of mine.

2. Is McCain not a combat veteran?

You wouldn’t be willing to vote for him. These ‘straws’ you put forth are just so many excuses. Kennedy-McCain did not pass. McCain has said he no longer supports that approach, but rather securing the border first, deporting criminal illegals, and making sure any others go to the back of the immigration line. Sounds like he made a lot of concessions in your direction.

McCain’s biggest promise is to keep our country safe and reign in DC and its ridiculous spending and entitlements.

But your’s is a pretty cynical position. Perhaps you’d be happier with the Democrats both moving the nominations and controlling the votes.

You actually think I agree with John McCain on everything? Your definition of thrown under the bus is my definition of a disagreement where I don’t allow my emotions to ride me.

1. #104. Where did I say it was your post? As a matter of fact, I count you among the three, count ‘em, three (3) Freepers who support McCain who do not routinely namecall and in general act like horses’ backends about their candidate.

2. You will find many vets, me among them, who consider McCain to be a traitorous collaborator. Knowing his history firsthand from other vets who were there negates the whole “war hero” BS mythology that McCain has relied on to get elected for office since his first run for Congress in the early 80s.

McCain doesn’t deserve a pass because of his military service any more than John Kerry, Jack Murtha, Jim Webb or Jeremiah Wright do, to name just a few others who’ve worn the uniform and then sullied it and everything it stands for. And I, unlike many here, judge people based on their actions, not the letter behind their name.

But, but, but...hurling invectives at one's opponent is the MacCain way of "convincing" potential allies who might have honest disagreements, and his supporters are simply imitating their master.

MacCain says a lot of things, so it's always best to judge him by his actions, and thirty years of betrayal indicates with pretty good accuracy what he'll continue to do even in the Oval Office.

In fact, if MacWhackJob weren't a Senator, with his character (or lack thereof), the worth of any testimony he were to give in a court of law would be sharply discounted.

Take spending and entitlements for instance. It was McCain who voted against the trillion dollar prescription drug plan. I is McCain who is opposed to ethanol subsidies. And though McCain voted against the original Bush tax cuts he has since voted to extend when and supports making them permanent. McCain also supports a gas tax holiday. That’s an imperfect but wholly acceptable record to me.
