WASHINGTON Sen. John McCain called Monday for reductions in carbon emissions and criticized the Bush administration for failing to lead the fight against climate change.
"We have many advantages in the fight against global warming, but time is not one of them. We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great," the Arizona Republican said in a speech delivered at a wind-energy facility in Portland, Ore. "The most relevant question is whether our own government is equal to the challenge."
McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, proposed a "cap-and-trade" system to reduce greenhouse gases and allow the sale of rights to excess emissions by firms that reduce their own emissions. ...
Such a system would "change the dynamic of our energy economy" by giving companies incentives to invest in alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear, clean coal, biomass and biofuels, McCain said, providing the United States with an energy supply "that is safe, secure, diverse and domestic."
--snip--
McCain's proposal falls short of those of Democratic contenders Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. They both called for reducing emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, in line with what's recommended by most scientists, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
"To his credit, Senator McCain wants to do something serious about global warming, but his proposal falls far short of what the science says we need to do today," said Gene Karpinski, president of the nonpartisan League of Conservation Voters. McCain's lifetime score from the League of Conservation Voters is 24 percent. That compares with 87 percent for Clinton and 86 percent for Obama.

Change the dynamics of our energy economy = Change it over from a free market system to a socialist system.
by giving companies incentives
Incentives = Do what the government orders you to do our face massive fines and/or jail time. Your incentive is keeping your own butt out of prison.
to invest in alternative energy sources
Invest = Forced to be told what you can and will do with your own money.
That would be fairly difficult. Last time he voted against drilling in the arctic himself. One of six republicans who did so. Wouldn't want to be a flip flopper would we John.
I sent the prepaid postage envelope back with this note and a penny:
“30 year republican - NO MORE!
“F” John McCain - He Sucks!”
In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Look at his competition.
I have the same feeling. I have a visceral dislike for the guy, and it grows more visceral by the day.
The man is unfit for the job, and the GOP is going down in flames for this buttwipe.
I emailed his campaign to say his criticism, directly or implied, of President Bush is NOT an incentive to vote for him. The thought of voting for McCain makes me ill but based on the other 2....especially Obama....I had resigned to vote for him. However, if McCain keeps going like he is......bashing Bush, supporting Kyoto etc.....when the time comes, I may not be able to ‘pull the lever’ for him.
What better way to create a brand new government bureaucracy,,,that will grow and grow over time,,,to tell us how to live.
That's just what we need,,,more and more useless government employees with the power to be more controlling, more intrusive, and more expensive to the taxpayer.
That's just what the business world needs too--a bigger, more regulating, more litigating, punishing, all-knowing, all-powerful, government knows-whats-best-for-us-all government.
And to top off the big, new government 'big brother' program,,,we also get a new career field for lawyers--"CAP AND TRADE" Law. If anyone has a college kid looking for a new, growing career in either the government or as a lawyer,,,,"CAP AND TRADE" Law is the way to go!!
This latest McCain move to the far-left was the last straw for me. This is absolutely outrageous.
McCain became the candidate because hoards of Dems crossed over and voted for him in the early Republican primaries.
This was the Soros (my guess) plan to force upon us a Republican candidate which the Dems KNOW they can defeat.
The Repubs did not know what hit them - the conservative candidates. And this is not the last time the Dems will choose the Republican Presidential candidate = based on the structuring of these primaries.
Yes we are in big trouble as a nation.
McCain totally ignores the significant number of scientists who do NOT agree with the globeloney alarmists.
May his idiocy spur millions to devote their time, money, efforts to electing conservatives into Congressional, Senatorial, State and local offices.
May the demonrats strategy backfire into massive efforts to get out the vote for OTHER candidates.
But right now, as they planned, McCain’s candidacy has taken the heart and energy and money out of most conservatives e who are just pulled back out of the fight.
Suffering ahead.
