Prognosis Usually Bleak for Condition, a Glioma
NY Times ^ | May 21, 2008 | LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN and ANAHAD O’CONNOR

Posted on 05/20/2008 7:42:41 PM PDT by neverdem

The statement that Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s doctors issued on Tuesday made clear that his malignant tumor was a glioma, a cancer that arises in the brain and that often carries a bleak prognosis.

Gliomas occur more frequently with advancing age, and studies have shown that in general patients in their 70s fare less well than those 45 and younger. Still, the statement also said Mr. Kennedy, 76, was in “good spirits and full of energy” and walking around his room at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Mr. Kennedy’s glioma is in the parietal area in the upper part of the left side of his brain, above the ear. This area of the brain involves motor control and ability to understand language, among other functions.

Malignant brain tumors rarely spread elsewhere in the body. But like the root of a plant, cancerous brain tumors can invade nearby areas in the brain.

Gliomas are categorized by subtypes and by a numerical gradation based on how aggressive they appear. But the doctors did not provide these details or the tumor’s size, saying only that the diagnosis was made by removing a small piece of the cancer in a biopsy, which followed a series of other tests that began after Mr...

--snip--

Mr. Kennedy underwent surgery seven months ago at the same hospital to restore blood flow through a narrowed carotid artery in his neck and to prevent a possible stroke. He had no symptoms at the time, the hospital said.

As part of the testing for that procedure, Mr. Kennedy very likely had an M.R.I. brain scan, Dr. Keith L. Black, director of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said in answer to a question. Because gliomas are fast-growing cancers, it is possible...

I’m not “whooping” about an old man’s bleak prognosis.

I’m simply not putting on blinders, and pretending a real bastard was a belated saint.

From Mary Jo Kopechne to SE Asia to immigration and welfare and quotas and on and on, his record has meant death and sowing the seeds of future disaster.

Forgive me for not putting on my rose colored sunglasses for his wake and singing Danny Boy with you.

I remember his record.

It was one of RR’s mistakes, corrected later. Like his regretted mistake with the first mass amnesty, and his mistake in hightailing it out of Beirut.

Leavened by an entire life and body of works that supported life, supported the military, supported personal responsibility and freedom around the world.

Unlike TK, whose lifetime body of works was to sow disaster and run away from responsibility.

Re: Why would the mods delete it? What is not true about it?

Is there some PC rule on FR that says that when an evil man gets sick, we must pretend he was saint?

They have deleted a lot of stuff said about Teddy lately that was both true and less to the point than your "The wrong person got out of the car back in 1969." & "Everything Teddy has done since then has been to hurt the USA." comments.

I agree and would say more, but I am standing by my late Mother's old adage that if you cannot find anything nice to say about someone, then do not say anything!

So I am closed mouth on this

When a man is discovered to have cancer, the pertinent fact is that he is a dying man, not whether he is a dying good man or dying bad man.

God will judge him soon enough.

Teddy was a disaster for America. God is more forgiving than I am. May Teddy find faith before he dies.

That is an awful cancer. He likely has less than 6 months.

Again, I am no fan of TK who with Bush gave us No Child Left Behind and damn near gave us an Amnesty Bill.

However, because of those things he is simply a misguided politician. Perhaps, he will come to grips with his mistakes but neither RR, GWB or TK are Evil.

Sorry I don’t agree. Now is when the MSM will be laying in the mythology about Saint Teddy the Benificent.

Now is exactly when we need to remind Americans that he was a scoundrel and a cad, before the false history is carved into stone.

Pol Pot also died an old man, in ill health. And I spit on his grave.

What he did to MaryJo was EVIL.

What he did to SE Asia was EVIL.

Tell me where I am wrong.

We are all dying anyway. Our mission here on earth is to do some good while we are here. Ted didn’t.

Nor I, I do not think it is a lack of sensitivity to speak how you feel. I for one think it is time to just let go and let God.
I mean no criticism at all, just how I feel. God can forgive all and I am letting go and letting God have it all.
Mr. Kennedy needs our prayers most of all. I would hope for the same, even from those who hate me.

"Judge him when he’s dead; God shows as much patience."

The problem is, honest comments about him when he's dead won't be allowed then either.

In the end we all get what we deserve for our deeds or misdeeds whatever the case may be, considering what we know about him, he has a lot to answer for, and maybe this is the final chapter for someone who steadfastly refuses to amend his evil and dark ways. Pharaoh comes to mind.

Teddy's outlived Mary Jo by 40 years so he has led a long, full life with lots of privilege and perks.Frankly, I would have thought his liver would have given out before his brain.

He needs to go into retirement right away and enjoy the rest of his years with his family - if he has any left who will speak to him. Somehow, I don't think that is in his plans.

But mortality catches up with everybody, some day. Teddy is no different even though he has been around almost as long as Robert Byrd.
